Granting a Family - Chapter 32: Seeking Permission

Church bells chimed, signifying the start of Sunday services and jarring Nathan awake on the uncomfortable bed in one of the jail cells. Kate was occupying his comfortable bed at home, fighting off a migraine she had been suffering with. He had spent time playing chess and reading to Allie to catch up on the week he was away. Once both she and Kate were peacefully sleeping, he decided for propriety's sake to sleep at the jail. It had been a very restless night as he re-lived Friday’s run-in with the Rutherford Gang, and worried about the health of the woman he loved. Nathan rubbed his eyes and sat up, feeling the need for coffee to help wake him up. He longed for some breakfast to stop the rumbling in his stomach, most likely worsened by not eating much the day before.

Nathan stood and stretched, trying to suppress a yawn as he pulled up his suspenders and tucked in his mostly unbuttoned shirt. While he was pulling on his boots, Thomas rushed into the office. “Oh hey, you’re up.”

“Did you actually do morning rounds today?” Nathan asked, surprised. I thought Bill was going to cover for you while Anne recovered and you helped her with the baby.”

“I volunteered to start going out again, because as much as I love my girls, there are times I need a little peace and quiet to actually hear myself think.” Thomas slumped into the chair behind the desk and groaned. “I think maybe I’ll spend a night in the jail so I can get some sleep.”

Nathan chuckled and sat down on the other side of the desk across from Thomas. “You are a lucky man to have such a beautiful family,” he admitted. “I’m glad you came in, because I wanted to talk to you about something regarding your sister.”

Thomas sat up in his chair and straightened his serge. “You still remember what will happen if you hurt her, right?” he asserted in a serious tone.

Running his fingers through his bed hair, Nathan felt nerves bubbling up inside of him. He tried to tell himself this was his underling, but this discussion was not about work. It was man to man...brother to potential brother. “Look, I would have this discussion with your father, but I know he’s in poor health living with some of your older brothers on the farm. I see you as Kate’s closest family and protector, so I want to do things in the proper way.” His hands suddenly felt clammy and even with his shirt partially unbuttoned, he felt hot and sweaty.

A big smile formed on his face, but Thomas tried to stay serious. “Are you going to ask what I think you are going to ask?”

Giving an annoyed little grunt, Nathan answered, “Just let me say this before I lose my nerve, ok?” He took a deep breath and just blurted it out. “Thomas, I’m in love with your sister Kathryn and plan to ask her to be my wife. I would like your blessing before I move forward with my plans.”

Tears were forming in the eyes of the usually composed and self-assured Constable, and he stood up with his arm extended to shake the hand of the man who had been a boss, mentor, friend, and now would become a real brother to him. Nathan let out a sigh of relief as he stood and accepted his hand, shaking it and then embracing in a hug. “Of course you have my blessing. I could see you two matched up the moment she came to town and I saw the two of you together. Having you and Allie be a part of the Bradshaw family is a dream come true, and I know Anne and Elsie will be overjoyed as well.”

“Thank you, Thomas. I just don’t want to keep waiting for a real family, and I found the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. Why shouldn’t we be together?” Nathan’s eyes grew distant, and his mind suddenly took him back to Friday’s confrontation. He shook his head and tried to remove the memory from his mind.

I’ve seen that look before, Thomas thought. “What really happened on that capture mission, Nathan? I heard the Rutherford Gang was brutal and have killed multiple Mounties who tried to nab them in other territories. You know this is just between us as brothers in arms and I won’t tell anyone, including my wife or sister. I just think you’ll feel better if you talk about it and get it off your chest.”

Nathan’s jaw was clenched and his entire body went tense. “I don’t really want to, but I’ve learned that it can help to talk it through. I really didn’t have time to discuss what happened with Gabe before he helped transfer the prisoners to Union City. I filled out the paperwork and gave them my statement, but I still may be called to testify in their trial. But for now I’m home, following up on the loose ends of the case and watching out for more trouble throughout the territory and near Hope Valley.”

“I am glad you’re back home for a while. Bill has been helping when he can, but he’s also been swamped with his own work. Between the new baby, trying to keep up with all the new residents, and making sure no one is making trouble with the new pipeline...let’s just say I’ve really missed you around here. I think there are some other people who have missed you even more than I have.” Thomas gave him a wink, and continued: “I checked on Katie this morning. Allie is being a great little nurse to her. Her energy is completely drained, but the headache is mostly gone. She’s been getting those on and off for years, and it always seems to hit when she is worried or stressed about something. This time my guess is she was concerned about you.”

Apprehension filled Nathan’s mind and heart. What if Kate doesn’t want this life of constant stress that comes with being a Mountie’s wife? He couldn’t stop the nagging thoughts from running wild through his brain. It made sense why many Mounties never did marry and have a family, or why a lot of women kept their distance when they found out what he did for a living. Even though he was more than just the serge he wore, a life in law enforcement affected the entire family.

Almost as if he could read his supervisor’s thoughts, Thomas tried to ease his fears. “Nathan, I have talked to Kathryn about this many times. She knows exactly what she’s getting herself into. She told me she’s in love with you, and love is strong enough to overcome any feeling of uneasiness that may come with your profession. Anne had trepidation when she first met me. She came from a well-to-do family, and they were not happy about her marrying a lowly Mountie at first. But of course I won them over with my good looks and charm.”  He flashed his most confident smile, which broke the tension and caused both men to snicker. “You don’t have to tell her about the scary parts of the arrest. In fact, you probably should keep most details to yourself. She can accept confidentiality and respect what you feel comfortable and are able to share.”

With his eyes closed, Nathan began recounting the dangerous mission with Gabe on Friday afternoon. “Our investigation led us to a cabin on the outskirts of the Brookfield area, but the rain kept us from going right away. I studied the maps closer and got some important information about the surroundings. I knew if we were wearing red serge we would be a target, knowing this group of gangsters have no qualms about killing officers of the law.” Nathan opened his eyes and saw Thomas intently listening, so he continued. “I was already in civilian clothes, as instructed by my superiors for investigating most cases. But I really felt like Gabe would be a target if he didn’t look like a civilian as well.”

“Smart idea,” Thomas affirmed. “I was going to tell you Superintendent Lewis called here raving about Nathan Grant being the best inspector he has seen in a really long time. Those evil men were on the wanted list for a very long time and eluded many Mounties and Sheriffs across the country.”

“We did get very lucky that they were shot by that farmer who was defending his family, but even then they were extremely skilled at hiding and paying off people to keep the law away. I give Gabe a lot of credit for combing the area during rounds and even in his free time, then putting every cabin and landmark on his map. We left our horses out of sight, then approached the cabin as lost fisherman who got caught in the storm since there was a fishing hole nearby. Their alibi was that they had been in a hunting accident. Things were going according to plan until the horses got spooked by something and left their hiding place. Once they saw the horses, they put it all together and knew we were Mounties. They were quick to grab their guns, but luckily the leader of the gang was the one most badly wounded. As he tried to shoot at us, his wound opened and began bleeding pretty bad and he fell over in pain. His partner decided to make a run for it, and was able to leave on Gabe’s horse. I called Newton over and went after him, while Constable Kinslow cuffed the ring leader and attended to his medical needs. Gabe’s horse did not like the way he was being handled, so Newton was easily able to catch up with them. We both dismounted, and luckily I overtook the guy and after a little hand-to-hand combat. I led him back to the cabin, we saddled up the men’s horses, and then took them back to town where we jailed them and called Union City for transport that came Saturday morning right before I left to come home.”

Silence ensued as Nathan finished giving an account of what transpired near Brookfield. After several minutes of silence and processing what he had just been told, Thomas finally spoke. “Bill told me something about you that I feel like sometimes causes you a lot of sleepless nights. He said ‘Nathan always wonders if he might have done better’. You have to know that when you are in dangerous situations, your training and instincts take over and that’s what has kept you safe all these years. My advice, for what it’s worth, is to talk it out if you need to, but then let it go. Remind yourself that you did your best, and try to move on as much as possible.”

“Easier said than done,” Nathan lamented. “But I do feel better after talking it all through. I definitely felt God’s protection on this mission, and I will work hard and have faith that I can continue to come home to my loved ones. I just don’t want to waste precious time anymore, especially when I know exactly what I want. I better go check on my girls. Thanks again for everything, Thomas.” Nathan hurried out of the Mountie office and started toward home, feeling hopeful and optimistic about things soon to come in his life.

As Nathan moved down Main Street, he saw that people had dispersed from church services and the bell had begun ringing again. Lucas and Fiona were the first couple he passed, and they seemed startled to see anyone in town after being the first to leave church. They thought no one would catch them holding hands and giggling together as they went to the Saloon to find some food from Gustav for their Sunday picnic together.

“Inspector Grant,” Lucas stammered, quickly pulling his hand away from Fiona’s. He stood up and straightened his tie and suit jacket. “Happy Sunday. I hear you put away some egregious fugitives this weekend. I commend you for your bravery, and thank you for keeping our communities safe.”

Nathan tried not to smirk at catching the new Hope Valley couple together, even though it seemed they were unsuccessfully hiding their relationship from everyone. “Lucas. Fiona. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday. And don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. Although, I’ll let you in on some insider information...everyone already knows you two have something going on.” He gave them a wink, leaving them a little bewildered as he walked away.

As he neared the row houses, Nathan noticed Elizabeth on her porch genuinely laughing with someone. When he got closer, he saw that it was Mike Hickam holding little Jack, both with smiles on their faces as they enjoyed a happy moment together. Nathan waved to the three of them, and for the first time he didn’t feel pain knowing the Thorntons wouldn’t be his family. Instead, he felt grateful to know that a good man like Hickam was in Elizabeth and little Jack’s future. When Mike saw Nathan he handed Jack over to his mother and walked over.

“Do you have a minute?” Hickam asked Nathan, motioning a little further away so Elizabeth couldn’t hear their conversation. “I wanted to talk to you about something.” He nervously looked down at his clasped hands, trying to work up the nerve to vocalize his feelings. “I know you are with Kathryn, uh, Miss Bradshaw now. But I also know your feelings for Elizabeth and little Jack were pretty strong. Even though you and Elizabeth have both told me things with the two of you are over, I wanted to let you know I’ve started spending time with the Thorntons and want to ask them to officially try out a relationship to see where it goes. I just wanted to make sure you were aware that even though I have had feelings for Elizabeth for a very long time, I respected your interest in her and didn’t make a move until I knew you had ended things. You are one of the people I admire most in this town.”

Nathan took hold of Hickam’s shoulders and looked him in the eye. “Mike, you are one of the most thoughtful and upstanding guys this community has to offer, not to mention smart and becoming more successful every day. Elizabeth and my little buddy Jack would be the luckiest family in the world to get a man like you as a husband and father. My only advice is take it slow and really pay attention to Elizabeth. Move at a pace she is comfortable with. What I saw just barely was the first genuine laugh from her in a really long time, so I think you are on the right track.”

Blushing at the thought of him making Elizabeth laugh, Hickam smiled and held out his hand. Nathan firmly shook Mike’s outstretched hand, then waved one last time to the mother/son duo. He felt the last of the weight of the burden from Jack Thornton’s death that he had been carrying for a long time lifted off his shoulders. It was the lightest he had ever remembered feeling. Life wasn’t perfect, but he felt blessed beyond measure at this moment in time.

Allie was sitting on their porch in her Sunday best when Nathan reached the house. She rushed over to him, letting herself get wrapped up in a huge warm hug that only her Dad could give. “Everyone told me to let you sleep after your busy week in Brookfield, but I went to church with Opal’s family anyway. Miss Bradshaw was still tired from her headache, but she encouraged me to go to the service and pray for you both. Can we make dinner for the Bradshaw’s today? You have to hold Elsie again, and won’t believe how much she’s grown in only a week!”

Nathan held his daughter a little tighter, trying to shove away the feelings of dread he had experienced this week, knowing how one dangerous mission could have taken him away from this girl who had lost so much already. He shifted his focus to the present and tried to take the advice Thomas gave him. “Allie, I think making dinner for all of the Bradshaws is a really great idea. How is Miss Bradshaw doing today? I’m sorry it took me so long to make it here to check on you both, but I’m glad you were able to attend church with your friends.”

“I just hope you got some sleep, Dad. I was worried about both you and Miss Bradshaw most of the night. She’s feeling a lot better, but she doesn’t have a lot of energy. I’ll get started on the food while you help her get packed up and ready to go back to her house.”

“Thanks, Allie girl. I just can’t believe how grown up you’ve become, and I appreciate what you did to make sure Kate was taken care of while I was gone. Can we sit for a minute and talk?” Nathan led her back to the porch steps where they sat in silence for a minute before he continued. “I know this might seem fast since I’ve only been dating Miss Bradshaw for a month, but very soon I would like to ask her to marry me. But I would never do that without permission from her family and from you. I just talked to Thomas this morning and he gave me his consent. You are my family and this affects you too, so I will only ask her if I have your blessing.”

Shock was the initial response to her Dad’s words, but a feeling of excitement rose and replaced every other emotion inside of her. “Are you serious?” Allie squealed. “I’m going to have a Mom again?” She jumped into Nathan’s arms with tears flowing down her cheeks. “My answer is absolutely, yes!”

Nathan chuckled and put his fingers to his lips. “Keep it down a little so she can’t hear you.”

“Oh, sorry. I just can’t help it,” Allie gushed. “You know, I tried so hard to keep my distance from Miss Bradshaw so I wouldn’t get hurt like I did with Mrs. Thornton. But for some reason I feel a stronger bond with her, and she just seems to get me. It doesn’t feel forced or awkward at all. Not to mention the way you feel about her. I’ve never seen you this happy, Dad. You deserve someone to love you the way you love them...and me.”

A lump had formed in Nathan’s throat, and he could barely squeak out a reply. “Thank you, Allie. All I’ve ever wanted is to give you a family with a mother and a father and…” he stopped before voicing the deepest desire of his heart.

“And a little brother or sister?” Allie finished his thought. “After holding baby Elsie, it makes me excited to be a big sister. Oh, and now I’ll be related to the Bradshaw’s for real and she will be my cousin!”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Nathan cautioned. “I’m not sure when I’ll be asking her. Yes, I do hope to eventually have babies, but that could also take some time. And remember, this is a secret.” If he were being honest with himself, his excitement level matched Allies. He was using all of his Mountie training to suppress his feelings and present a composed exterior. “Let’s get inside and prepare the food, especially since I didn’t even eat breakfast this morning.”

Allie quickly gathered items from the pantry and pulled out pots and pans, enthusiastically working in the kitchen to prepare a big family meal. Nathan made his way up the stairs with butterflies in his stomach at the thought that very soon he just might be sharing his bedroom with the woman who currently occupied it. He tried to calm down his racing heart by taking deep breaths, then quietly knocked. He heard light footsteps move to the door, and Kate stood before him fully dressed and ready for the day, radiant in her casual light blue dress and her golden curls flowing down her back. He couldn’t remember ever seeing a more welcome or beautiful sight.

Kathryn slipped comfortably into Nathan’s welcoming arms and the two of them stood in the doorway just enjoying being near each other. “I’m so glad you’re home,” she murmured, nuzzling even further into his chest and breathing his masculine scent that she faintly enjoyed on items throughout his room. But the real thing was far better than just hints of his smell on pillows or articles of clothing. “I missed you, Nathan.”

Taking her face into his hands, Nathan stared into her eyes both to check the condition of her head and trying to read her emotions. “How is your head feeling, my love?”

Shivers went down her spine at his use of those two words to acknowledge her. “My head is much better today, thank you. I’m just a little fatigued, but that always happens to me after a migraine. I’ll be fine in a day or two. I apologize for yesterday and any behavior that may have been influenced by the medication Faith gave me. I never do well with medicine, and sometimes it makes me not act like myself.”

Nathan flushed at first, remembering the kiss they shared as she was in his bed. “I’m just glad you have improved. Can I help you get your things together? Allie is cooking, then we plan to take the meal to your house. We better get your things moved back home as well.”

They walked together inside the room holding hands, and Nathan noticed the bed was made and her bag was packed. He walked over and picked up the book on the nightstand. “Were you able to read The Circular Staircase while I was gone? I hoped it wouldn’t be too intense for you to read when you were staying in an unfamiliar place, but I knew it was one of your favorites. I had just finished, and it wasn’t due back at the library until this coming week.”

“I did,” she admitted, moving over to join him next to the bed. “Nathan, your woodworking skills are so impressive. And for some reason I felt safe here, even with you out of town.” She delicately touched the carved roses on the headboard, then turned to touch the hands that created all of the furniture she had admired all week long. She let her hands wander up his arms to appreciate the muscular build that was so strong, yet could be so gentle at the same time. “Your bed is the most comfortable one I’ve ever slept in,” she disclosed, then realized it probably wasn’t an appropriate comment and she couldn’t blame the drugs this time. She timidly looked up at Nathan to see his reaction, and he didn’t seem phased by the forward nature of the conversation. If anything, he seemed more comfortable with her than he had ever been, which both excited and terrified her at the same time.

His hormones racing again made showing restraint and maintaining self-control more difficult than ever, but Nathan was determined to not let Kate see him squirm. He leaned down and his lips went next to ear where he whispered, “I think it would be best for us to move downstairs, so I can continue to be a gentleman.” He picked her bag up off the bed, and took her hand to lead her out of the room.

Once in the hallway, Nathan stopped briefly and turned toward Kate. He dropped the bag and took her in his arms, kissing her gently and deeply at the same time. She responded in kind, until they heard Allie bound up the stairs and stop in her tracks with a loud, “Oh!” They both turned around to face the startled teen, and all three with red faces looked around at one another and then burst into a fit of boisterous laughter.

Kathryn grabbed her throbbing head, unable to contain the giggles still coming out of her. “Ok, ok. We have to stop or my head might just explode.”

“Sorry,” Allie apologized. “I was going to change out of my nice church dress before I finished cooking. If you both want to help me, we can get it finished a lot faster. I’ll be back down in a few minutes.” As Nathan tried to hold back his own laughter, he smiled at Allie then grabbed Kate with one hand and her bag with the other hand before heading downstairs to the kitchen.

Once the food was ready, they walked everything over to the Bradshaw’s house. Thomas had just come down the stairs to get his wife a drink when they arrived, but he decided to have Anne and the baby come downstairs to enjoy the meal together. When Anne slowly came down and sat at the kitchen table, she gave Nathan a knowing look and he was sure Thomas had told her of their conversation at the Mountie office. Everyone in the room knew Nathan’s intentions, except for Kate. He knew it had to happen soon, or she might be tipped off by someone.

Thomas brought down Elsie from sleeping in her cradle, and handed her over to Nathan. Allie had been right that the baby had grown and changed in just one week. He snuggled her close, and breathed in the sweet new baby smell. He placed a little kiss into her locks of fine, dark hair that covered her adorable little head. Allie rushed over and put her finger near the baby’s hand, and Elsie gripped onto it like it was the most natural thing in the world. Kate joined them and put one arm around Nathan and the other around Allie as they surrounded the baby, speaking sweetly to her. Both Thomas and Anne looked on and smiled at each other with a look they both understood. They were witnessing the forming of The Grant Family, and it was beautiful to behold.

Granting a Family - Chapter 31: Time Apart

It had been a long Monday, and Kathryn couldn’t stop yawning as she and Allie finished washing the dishes at the Bradshaw’s house after dinner. Getting up before the sun to see Nathan off this morning, combined with helping take care of Elsie and keeping track of Allie, was all catching up to her. Thomas and Anne had gone upstairs already to try and put the baby down, so once the dishes were finished Kathryn and Allie would head back to the Grant’s row house to sleep. Allie had been polite and helpful, but she was still acting a little hesitant about getting too close to another woman who had the potential to be married to her Dad and be a mother to her. Both were missing Nathan, the man in their lives who brought stability and protection, but Kathryn hoped the two of them would use this time together to become closer than just a teacher/student relationship.

“All done, Miss Bradshaw,” Allie announced. “Can we go back home so I can get ready for bed? I’m doing the morning shift at the switchboard, and I’m hoping my Dad calls while I’m there.”

“Of course,” Kathryn answered. “Let me just run up to my room and grab my overnight bag and we can head over.” Suddenly nervous, she ran upstairs and had to sit down on her bed and breathe for a few minutes before she was ready to spend the night in Nathan’s house...and his bed. She was grateful no one was around to see her red face when that thought entered her mind. She picked up her bag and left the room. In the hallway, Thomas had just come out of his room to get a glass of water downstairs for his wife who was feeding the baby and putting her to sleep.

“Heading over to the Grant’s house?” he asked with a smirk. “Things must be getting really serious for you to be sleeping over there, and acting like Allie’s Mom while Nathan’s away.”

“He loves me, Thomas,” Kathryn admitted. “And I love him. It’s all happening so fast, but at the same time doesn’t seem fast enough...if that makes any sense at all.”

“Uh oh, I think you only feel that way when it is something that is meant to be,” he stated. “That’s the exact way I felt about Anne when we were first together. He better treat you right, because I really don’t want to have to beat up my boss who is also bigger and stronger than me.”

Kathryn chuckled and gave her brother a quick hug before heading down to join Allie downstairs. They went the short distance to the Grant house and Allie quickly dressed for bed while Kathryn made some tea to calm her nerves and help her feel more relaxed for the evening. Allie came bounding down the stairs dressed in her best nightgown and holding a book.

“Miss Bradshaw, can you read to me every night just like my Dad does?” Allie asked, holding the book out for her to take. “This book just came into the library and I haven’t read it since I was a lot younger. Back when Uncle Nathan...now my Dad...read it to me, I was going through a really hard time missing my Mom. He wanted me to think about the positive things we had in our lives.”

“Of course I would love to read to you,” Kathryn answered, taking the book from Allie. She smiled when she saw the title of the book. “Pollyanna is one of my favorite books to read to my students,” she confessed. “I’m not sure I have the talent your Dad has to do all the voices, but I’ll do my best.”

Setting her tea down on the end table, Kathryn sat down and opened the book. She was a little thrown off when Allie settled in beside her, but realized how natural it felt to be reading together before bed. After a few chapters, their eyelids were drooping and they were struggling to stay awake. “Thanks for reading to me, Miss Bradshaw. I’m going to brush my teeth and go right to sleep so I won’t be too tired to work in the morning.” She gave Kathryn a tired smile and left to go to bed.

Once her tea was gone, Kathryn washed the mug she had used, since she hadn’t seen any tea cups in the house. Suddenly feeling exhausted and deciding it was time to make herself comfortable in the home of the man she was madly in love with, she picked up her overnight bag, let out a deep breath, and slowly walked up the stairs. Entering Nathan’s bedroom, Kathryn looked around with curiosity. She felt like an intruder being in Nathan’s personal space, but if she was being honest, she was excited to pull back the curtain to his private world.

Just like Nathan, his bedroom was simply decorated with just the basics and necessities. A large bed, that he had obviously made custom to fit his large frame, took up a good portion of the room. The headboard was etched and carved with his signature craftsmanship. She smiled at the rose theme he had used, knowing the meaning behind them as she had learned about his and his mother’s love of planting rose bushes wherever they lived. He had built matching nightstands that were beautifully crafted, which sat on either side of the bed. One held a wooden picture frame that had “Dad” carved into it, and inside was a picture of Nathan and Allie dressed up at a formal event. On the other was the current book he was reading. The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart was one of her own favorite mystery novels, and it didn’t surprise her at all that he was reading it, after learning of his remarkable taste in literature.

Finishing her self-guided tour of Nathan’s room, she ran her fingers along the back of the sitting chair that accompanied a little writing desk in the corner of the room next to the wardrobe that held his civilian clothes, plenty of suspenders with a few ties that hung on a small hook on the side, and a few nicer suits. His old Constable uniform was next to his formal Inspector uniform, and she gently stroked the stunning red serge jacket then pulled it to her face and inhaled the scent of him that still lingered from the last time he had worn it. A small dresser was the final piece of handcrafted furniture in the room that she assumed held his more intimate apparel and private things. She saw a note on top of the dresser that Nathan had written to her.

My sweetest Kate,

I have cleared the right side of the drawers for you to put your things in while you are staying here with Allie. I also made sure there was space in my wardrobe to hang some of your dresses. I just finished the book on my nightstand, but thought you might enjoy having something to read before bed. Make yourself at home, and thanks again for being willing to watch over Allie and allowing her to be home while I’m away. I miss you so much already, and can’t wait to be back in your arms very soon.

All my love,

Nate

Kathryn sighed and hugged the note close to her heart as she contemplated how lucky she was to be blessed with such a thoughtful man. She unpacked her small bag and placed some of her clothes in the drawers provided, making a mental note to bring some dresses over tomorrow after going to see Anne and baby Elsie. Changing into her nightgown, Kathryn tried to push out of her mind how many times Nathan had changed in this very spot. What is wrong with you? she asked herself, trying to shove inappropriate thoughts aside. But that was difficult when she was here, getting ready to sleep in the same bed Nathan Grant slept in every night he was home in Hope Valley. She pulled down the covers of the neatly-made bed and crawled in, feeling small on such a large mattress. She was surprised how comfortable it was and how safe she felt within these walls, which caused her to drift off almost immediately after her head hit the pillow. Thoughts of a good-looking Mountie Inspector with dark hair and crystal blue eyes danced through her mind until she fully lost consciousness.

Gabe had to shake Nathan awake early Tuesday morning on the cot he was sleeping on in the Mountie office in Brookfield. Surprised he had slept so long and free from the recurring dream that had disrupted his sleep for months, he stood up and suddenly missed his comfortable bed at home. A mischievous smile formed at his lips as he thought about who was occupying his bed at home, but quickly chided himself for the inappropriate thoughts that threatened to overtake his mind.

“I would ask what you’re thinking,” Gabe said, bringing Nathan back into reality. “But honestly, I’m not sure I want to know. I’m thinking it has to do with a certain school teacher in Hope Valley?”

“Constable Kinslow, it is certainly none of your business.” Nathan attempted a stern look, but the two friends burst into laughter instead. Gabe handed him a steaming cup of coffee and sat down at the desk to try and work on a strategy to catch the final men in the gang who had been causing so much trouble near Brookfield. “I just talked to the Superintendent who is well aware of this case. They think this same group committed crimes throughout the territory, but they always eluded the other inspectors. He expects great things for his top tracking inspector.”

“Great,” Nathan lamented. “As if I didn't feel enough pressure to solve this case already. I’ve got to catch these guys soon, or I’m in some serious trouble when Superintendent Lewis comes for my review. Let’s make a plan for where to start tracking today, and then we can go get the horses to head out.”

Gabe pulled out the map they had marked with their search from the past week. “Do you still think the ringleader is too hurt to have gone very far?”

“Yes,” Nathan confirmed. “I believe he was shot during the last armed robbery they committed by that farmer who came at them from behind. We caught the one who was probably the lookout man and got away faster. They were confident the one in charge was shot, and possibly the second guy as well. We haven’t had any other robberies or murders since that one, so more than likely they are either dead or convalescing somewhere. First, let’s go to the general store and see if anyone has been in to buy medical supplies. One of the locals could be taking care of them and hiding it for some reason.”

Gabe folded up the map. “I’ll head over to the store and talk to Joe while you start getting Newton ready at the livery.”

“Thanks Gabe. We’re getting closer to apprehending these outlaws, I can feel it. I want to get this over with so I can get back home to my girls.” He said the last part mumbling to himself, but his Constable friend just gave him an understanding smile as he left the Mountie office to walk across the street. Nathan set down his empty coffee mug and ran his fingers through his hair to tame some of the wild strands going in every direction from the long ride on Newton and the night’s sleep on a cot. With determination, he walked over to the livery to brush Newton and saddle him up for a long day on the job.

A light knocking sound brought Kathryn out of a deep sleep, and as she started to fully wake up she felt disoriented and couldn’t remember where she was. Her nose caught a hint of Nathan’s muscular scent, and suddenly she sat up and remembered she had been sleeping in his bed. She noticed the knocking sound coming from the bedroom door, so she jumped out of bed and covered herself in a long robe and opened the door to find Allie all dressed and ready for the day.

“Hi Miss Bradshaw, I’m so sorry if I woke you,” Allie apologized. “I’ve been up for a while finishing my chores and eating breakfast, but it’s time for me to go do my shift at the switchboard. I have some extra breakfast staying warm for you on the stove if you want.”

Embarrassed to have slept so late, Kathryn cleared her throat and attempted to speak without her voice cracking. “Allie, I’m so sorry I overslept. I think the baby being born and not getting much sleep the past few days caught up with me, and that bed is the most comfortable one I’ve ever slept in…” she suddenly felt color rise to her cheeks, but tried to change subjects so it wasn’t noticeable. “Thank you for making breakfast and getting yourself ready. I am truly impressed with your level of responsibility. I’ll probably come to the Mercantile in a little while, so I’ll see you there.”

“Ok,” Allie answered, trying not to giggle at how flustered her teacher seemed to be based on the speed she was speaking and the blush she noticed on her face after mentioning her Dad’s bed. Adults are weird, she thought. “See you later,” Allie said, as she turned to leave.

Kathryn closed the door and threw herself back onto the bed, disappointed with herself for not keeping her cool in front of a girl who wasn’t just a student, but also the daughter of the man she loved. You have got to get it together Miss Bradshaw, Kathryn scolded herself. She quickly dressed and folded her nightgown, which she placed in one of her designated drawers in the dresser. Downstairs in the kitchen, she uncovered the plate Allie had left for her with eggs, bacon, and toast. A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice sat on the counter, along with freshly brewed coffee. Trying not to get emotional, Kathryn realized that Allie had been taking care of Nathan this way for quite some time. She felt honored to have been the recipient of this impressive young teenage girl’s affection and act of loving service. Her heart was opening up to Allie even more, and hoped she could feel it too so they could one day hopefully be a real family.

After enjoying her breakfast, Kathryn cleaned up the kitchen and decided to check on Thomas, Anne, and Elsie before making a list and shopping at the Mercantile. Thomas was dressed in his uniform getting ready to leave for rounds when she walked into the house and made him jump when she said hello.

“Oh hey there, Katie. How was your first night as a mom?” Thomas winked at Kathryn and she just rolled her eyes.

“Allie was wonderful, and I think we will get along great this week,” Kathryn happily reported. “Is Anne awake? I want to run up and see her before I run some errands in town. I need her to help me make a list for the Mercantile so I can bring back some things for you all.”

“She was feeding the baby, but I’m sure she’s finished by now,” he said. “Do you mind staying with her while I do my rounds, then when I get back for a lunch break you could go to the Mercantile while I spend time with my family?”

“Of course. Be safe, big brother.” Thomas walked out the door to head off to work, and Kathryn went upstairs to see her sister-in-law and little niece for a nice little visit.

Summer rains washed out all tracking trails they had been working on all week long and Nathan was very discouraged. It was already Friday morning, and he had hoped to be back in Hope Valley by now. Several leads had turned cold, but they did have one that seemed to make the most sense and he felt it in his bones that the two leaders of the gang were still hanging out close by, recovering from gunshot wounds. They had been so close when it got dark the night before and the storms rolled in, but now they had yet another setback with all the rain washing away his hopes at being with Kate and Allie this weekend. He stared out the window getting more depressed with every lightning strike and rumble of thunder.

“Don’t be so gloomy,” Gabe urged, standing up from the desk in his partially unbuttoned Henley and suspenders, matching Nathan’s casual look as they tried to keep cool from the humid summer air. “I know you were hoping to be home by today, but the storm looks like it might let up in a couple hours and then we can go to the place we narrowed down with all the clues we found this week. I’m sure they couldn’t have gone anywhere in this storm, and we still have an opportunity to catch them by surprise. Why don’t you use the telephone to let Constable Bradshaw know you’ll be here a little longer. I’ll give you some privacy, and go next door to get us some lunch that I’ll bring back to eat while we wait out the storm.

Nathan was excited when he heard Allie’s voice at the switchboard of Hope Valley again today. “Hey you, it’s so good to hear your voice. I miss you so much. Are you still being nice to Kate, um, I mean Miss Bradshaw?”

“Yes, Dad,” she answered with her usual annoyed teenager voice. “We’ve actually had a really fun week. She’s been reading Pollyanna to me at night. Remember when you read that to me when I was having a hard time and  you told me to look on the bright side? It’s such a great book. Also, we get to play with baby Elsie every day. She is so sweet and starting to make the cutest little noises. Miss Bradshaw is also an amazing cook and is teaching me how to bake a lot of new things so we will be eating a lot better when you get home…” Allie prattled on, and Nathan was content listening to her talk about the time she was spending with Kate, the woman he loved. He was glad they were having such a good time, but it didn’t help put him in a better mood no matter how much Pollyanna Allie tried to push on him. Why did your kids always take lessons you taught them then turn it around on you later?

Lost in his thoughts, it took a minute for Nathan to realize Allie had stopped talking. “Oh, um, hey that’s great you are having such a great time. I wish I could be there to join in the fun.”

“So you aren’t coming home today, huh? Allie sounded disappointed, but not completely distraught. “It’s been raining here, and from the sound of things on your end you are getting storms as well. How long do you think you’ll have to stay?”

“Hopefully not much longer. Can you patch me through to Thomas at the office?” Nathan hoped to catch the Constable while he was in the office to explain his situation.

After a few rings he heard Thomas pick up and Allie told them both goodbye and disconnected on her end. “So, Inspector Grant, you haven’t caught those fugitives yet? You know this isn’t going to help your reputation as the best tracker in Alberta.” Thomas joked.

“We’re close, but this summer storm is not helping matters. I am pretty confident they are within certain boundaries. Should be home in a few days at most. I hope you are looking out for both of our girls. How’s Anne and the baby?”

“My girls are getting stronger every day and being a father is the best thing that has ever happened to me, Nathan. You were right.” Thomas fought a lump in his throat and tears that were welling up in his eyes. “As for your girls, I really think their relationship is taking off. Although, you may never get your bed back once you get home, because the news that got back to me is that Katie hasn’t ever slept in a more comfortable bed and seems very rested every morning when she comes back here.”

Nathan was glad Constable Bradshaw couldn’t see the bright red color his entire face and neck had become as he thought about Kate sleeping where he usually did. Unfortunately, Gabe walked in at that exact moment and gave Nathan a questioning grin. “It looks like this storm will be out of here soon then we are headed out again. You know the Mounties always get their men and I won’t quit until these gangsters are brought to justice. My lunch just arrived, so I’ll be in touch again. Give my girls hugs for me. Goodbye.”

“Should I even ask about the blushing, while talking to Constable Bradshaw no less?” Gabe lightly punched Nathan’s shoulder as he joked with his superior, mentor, and friend. “It’s going to be clearing up soon, so eat this plate of food I got for you and be ready to take down this crime ring once and for all.”

Friday night, Allie and Kathryn stayed at the Bradshaw's later than usual to play games with Thomas and Anne before they headed back to get ready for bed. Both of them were sad Nathan hadn’t been able to come home for the weekend, and they fervently prayed for his safety and success in finding the men who had caused so much pain across the territory. By the time they had both gotten ready for bed, Kathryn had one of her headaches and Allie asked if she could read out loud instead, while she relaxed in Nathan’s bed. She agreed to just two chapters, and when those were over, the pain from her headache had gotten worse.

Allie suggested making her some tea that was supposed to help the pain, and Kathryn readily agreed. Playing nurse to her teacher and friend, Allie helped her sip the tea and put a cold rag on her forehead. She also blocked all the light from the room, and suggested sleeping next to her in case she needed anything in the night. They both fell asleep holding hands in Nathan’s large bed, a deep bond forming even stronger as they spent time together in the Grant’s simple row house.

By morning, Kathryn’s head was much worse and Allie didn’t have any other ideas other than getting Faith. She ran to town and was happy to see Faith at the Infirmary checking on an overnight patient. “Faith, I need your help! Miss Bradshaw has had a bad headache and it’s only getting worse. I’ve tried that tea that is supposed to help the pain and put her in a dark room and used cool rags on her forehead. Nothing is working, and I need you to help ease her pain. She was also getting sick to her stomach and won’t eat anything.”

“You did all the right things, Allie,” Faith assured her. “It sounds like a migraine, and I have a few things I could try. Let me put some supplies into my bag and we’ll head right over to help her feel better.”

Nathan got back into town early in the afternoon on Saturday. He couldn’t wait to be back home, so even though he had spent until late in the night processing his prisoners and arranging for immediate transport, he got up at first light and urged Newton to get him home as quickly as possible. He knew it would be another short stay before going on to Union City to testify in the trial of the newly discovered Rutherford Gang who had been wreaking havoc all over the territory. It had been a long, intense week as he investigated and eventually caught up with the two wounded leaders of the pack as they gained their strength in a very secluded cabin with help from a loner who lived near the area and thought he was doing a kind deed.

Hope Valley was a welcome sight, and he immediately took Newton to the livery to be taken care of properly after a long day’s ride. He gave his trusty partner a nice brush down, along with plenty of water and food to replenish all the energy he had used up on their mission to Brookfield. Once he had finished, he grabbed his overnight bag and hurried as fast as he could back home.

Allie was downstairs with a somber look on her face when Nathan walked inside. Terror pierced his heart as his mind raced through worst case scenarios. “What’s wrong?” he asked, moving to her side and wrapping his daughter up in his arms.

“Dad!” she exclaimed, although more quietly than usual. “Everything is going to be fine, I’m just worried about Miss Bradshaw. She’s had this horrible headache since last night that Faith is calling a migraine, and she’s given her some medicine that should make her feel better soon. I was just worried about you, and I’m so glad you’re back. Did you nab the bad guys, Dad?”

“As if you even had to ask. You know what I always say,” he reminded her.

“The Mounties always get their man,” she repeated.

“Or in this case, men.” Nathan looked over at the stairs and then back at his daughter. “Is Faith still with her?”

“Yeah, I was just waiting for her to finish so I could find out if she’s improved. I’m sure seeing you will really help, too. I think she kind of likes you.” Allie didn’t seem upset about it at all, and Nathan was overjoyed that the two of them had taken to each other while he was away.

“It sounds like you had a great time...I’m not sure either one of you really missed me, did you?” Before Allie could answer Nathan’s question, Faith came down the stairs with a pleasant look on her face.

“Nathan,” Faith declared. “You’re back! I’m sure Kathryn will be excited to see you. She is much better, but still very weak. She needs to stay in bed until at least tomorrow, and should take it easy for a few days. I’ll follow up with her again before she goes back to bed. She may have to stay here again tonight, because I don’t want her moved. I hope that won’t be a problem with you back.”

“No, that is fine. I can find somewhere else to sleep tonight,” he promised. “May I go up and see her?”

“Of course. I have to head back to the Infirmary, but let me know if you need anything or if she gets worse again.” Faith smiled, gave Allie a hug and left to go back to town.

Nathan climbed the stairs vigorously, wanting to see for himself that Kate was on the mend. He knew she got severe headaches on occasion, but it only made him being away even that much more difficult. He quietly entered his darkened room and his heart nearly burst with an array of emotions seeing the woman he loved in his bed. If he hadn’t known she had been suffering all day, he would have never known by looking at her. In a simple, but elegant nightgown and her soft golden curls spread across the pillow, she was simply radiant.

He rushed to her side and gently picked up her hand and her eyes fluttered open. “Nathan! Is that really you? I’m so sorry you had to get home only to find me like this. I’m afraid it was Allie taking care of me, not the other way around, since last night. You’ve raised such a thoughtful and kind daughter.”

“Oh my love, I’m so sorry you’ve been in pain.” Nathan pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead and she put her hands on either side of his face, pulling his lips from her forehead to her lips. Even though Nathan was attempting to be tender and not worsen her headache, Kate kissed him with all the passion and longing she had been feeling since he rode away almost a week ago. He let himself get lost in the moment, until he became painfully aware of where they were. He quickly pulled away and stood up, his heart racing and breathing heavy. “Can I get you anything? Some water, maybe? I think I need some water, I’ll be right back.” He bolted out of the door, closing it quickly but quietly. He leaned against the wall and ran both hands through his hair, trying to calm his senses before going back downstairs and facing his daughter.

“Is she doing better?” Allie asked, as he went straight for the glasses to pour water for both him and Kate.

“Yes, she’s doing a lot better. I just needed some water, we both did. I’m going to get this right back up to her.” Nathan once again rushed back up the stairs and took deep breaths before opening his bedroom door and calmly delivering the glasses of water. “Here you go, Kate. I’m sorry I rushed out of here so quickly.”

“It was my fault. I think the medicine Faith gave me tends to take away some inhibitions. I need to sleep it off, especially since I’m feeling quite drowsy right now. I promise when I’m feeling better we’ll talk about our week, and I won’t make you uncomfortable with my passionate kissing in your bed.” Kathryn could feel her speech slurring and her eyelids felt heavy. “Goodnight, Nate. I love you.”

“I love you, too,” he whispered, leaning down to lightly brush his lips across her temple. Chuckling at the effect the medication was having on Kate, he grabbed the chair by his desk and just sat and watched her sleep for several minutes before quietly going back downstairs to spend time catching up with his not-so-little girl. Although this wasn’t the homecoming he was expecting, Nathan was grateful he had survived a really intense Mountie mission to come safely home to his girls in his house. It all felt so right having Kate here, even though she was struggling through her migraine. If this is the way life would be as a real family, he simply couldn’t wait much longer. Every time he stared death in the face, it made him realize he couldn’t put off the important things in life...instead, he was ready to embrace the future he dreamed of having and make them a reality right now.

Granting a Family - Chapter 30: New Perspectives

News of Elsie Mae’s arrival permeated the town as people spread the news before and after the church service. Many heads were also turned when they saw Nathan come to church holding hands with Kathryn. Allie sat next to Nathan and seemed slightly nervous about her dad’s new relationship on display for the entire town to see. When Pastor Joseph Canfield observed the newest Hope Valley couple beaming in the pew, he couldn’t help but smile. He knew that Nathan had gone through a lot over the past few years, and seeing him finally get a chance at real happiness did his heart good.

Elizabeth knew Nathan had begun courting Kathryn, but actually seeing the two of them together was more painful than she expected. She sat with little Jack near the back so she could escape the service when her boy just couldn’t sit still any longer. Deep regret pierced her heart at the thought that if she had just made different decisions, Nathan might be sitting next to her holding her hand and helping wrestle her very rambunctious three year old. She was happy Thomas and Anne’s baby had arrived safely, and decided to take them a homemade meal later to be a good neighbor and friend.

Mike Hickam was running late for church, having gotten back into town late Saturday night from dealing with problems relating to the oil pipeline. These days he wasn’t getting as much help from Fiona and Lucas, as the two of them were quite distracted when they were together. He rolled his eyes just thinking about the way the two of them shamelessly flirted with one another, then denied there was anything going on beyond being business partners. Upon entering the church, the congregation was singing the opening hymn and Hickam scanned the room for an open seat. His heart pounded a little faster as he noticed one open space right behind Elizabeth and little Jack. He quietly slipped into the seat and tried to blend in, which usually wasn’t too difficult for him.

As a prayer was being offered, little Jack turned around to survey the congregation and look for a playmate or someone who would help him escape the crowded room. Right when things were completely silent, Jack discovered a familiar face right behind him and yelled enthusiastically, “Hickam!”, causing a rumble of chuckles throughout the congregation. Pastor Joseph quickly finished his prayer, trying not to give in to the laughter brewing up in him. Mike knew his face had turned bright red as everyone opened up their eyes and spied little Jack pointing right at his friend. Knowing he had everyone’s attention, little Jack was full of excitement and had no desire to sit still.

Feeling his own need to disappear from everyone’s sight, Hickam placed his hand on Elizabeth’s shoulder and offered to take her son outside so she could enjoy the service in peace. She smiled and nodded, and watched the two of them disappear out the door. Elizabeth knew she should be able to focus on the sermon without a toddler distracting her, but jumbled thoughts about Mike Hickam filled her mind instead. She touched her hand to the place on her shoulder that he had made contact with, and felt a spark of something that left her very perplexed. She pushed everything out of her mind and once again tried to focus on the message being given.

Nathan watched Hickam take little Jack outside and smiled, but also felt a familiar pain in his chest thinking about the little boy he had come to love so much. He never knew how deep his love for children was until Allie was born. He loved his little niece since the first time he held her when she was a few months old, and becoming her parent from the time she was young had brought him more joy than he had ever known. Then watching over Jack’s son made him realize even more how much he wanted a child of his own. This morning as he held Elsie Mae fresh from heaven and watched Allie and Kate snuggle her, his desire for a real family quickly escalated. Squeezing Kate’s hand, he quietly wondered how long a respectable courtship needed to last.

Kathryn observed Nathan’s reaction to little Jack leaving, and wondered how to broach the subject with him later. She needed to hear the rest of the dream he had that he claimed made him feel ready to completely move on from his obligation to Elizabeth and her son. Nathan was a wonderful father to Allie, and when he held tiny Elsie in his large hands so sweetly...that melted Kathryn, making her desire for her own children stronger than ever. She hadn’t known many men who were as big and strong as Nathan, yet so gentle and loving at the same time. Her eyes felt heavy from lack of sleep, and she slowly laid her head on Nathan’s shoulder and closed her eyes for just a moment. She felt his arm slip around her and sleep came quickly as she melted into him.

Nudging Kate, Nathan wished Pastor Joseph’s sermon had gone on for much longer so he could feel her next to him as she slept peacefully. He thought maybe he shouldn’t have dragged her to church after such a long night, but knew Anne and Thomas needed some alone time with their new baby, just like he needed time with Kate before he left town again tomorrow. He hadn’t told her he might be gone for another week or more to finish his investigation with Gabe in Brookfield, and worried about telling Allie now that he knew she wanted to be home in her own bed. Maybe they could figure out a solution that would work for everyone.

Kathryn woke up and looked around at everyone filing out of the church. She hoped Pastor Canfield would forgive her this once for sleeping through his sermon. Smoothing her hair and trying not to look embarrassed, Kathryn stood up and faced Nathan who was smiling at her sheepishly. “Why did you let me sleep?” she scolded him playfully.

“He grabbed her hand and motioned for her to walk into the aisle. “I knew you needed some rest after the long and stressful night you had. I think God can forgive you for sleeping after all you did to help Anne and Thomas get their little girl here safe and sound. Do you want to take a long way home so we can talk? Allie is talking to her friends for a few minutes and I told her I would see her in a bit.”

Kathryn tried to ignore the stares and whispers from well-meaning church goers, and just smiled at anyone who made eye contact with her. They shook hands with Pastor Joseph and tried to slip away from the crowd, moving into a more wooded and secluded area away from the church and behind the row houses. It was definitely feeling like the middle of summer as the temperature, along with the sun, was rising as afternoon approached.

“I wanted to get you alone so we could talk uninterrupted,” Nathan confessed. They found a large log they could sit on in the shade, and both settled in next to each other. He exhaled, not wanting to disappoint her in what he was about to say. “I have to leave again in the morning,” he began. “I’m not finished investigating with Gabe, and this is an important case I need to have wrapped up before Superintendent Lewis comes to do my first Inspector evaluation in a few weeks.”

“Oh,” Kathryn responded, feeling disappointed. She knew Mountie business might take him away on occasion, but lately it seemed he was gone more than he was at home. “How long this time?”

“I’m really not sure. We have to bring in the ringleaders, and that could take anywhere from a couple days to over a week.” Nathan pulled Kate close to him in a loving embrace with her head on his shoulder and hand on his chest. His jaw rested on her head and he closed his eyes as he breathed in the scent of her while they sat quietly contemplating more time apart. “Leaving home used to just be part of the job and didn’t bother me much, but now all I can think about is how much I am missing when I’m gone.”

Kathryn sat up and looked Nathan in the eyes so he knew she meant what she said. “Of course you are missed when you are away, but you are a fantastic Mountie and I will always support you in your work. What can I do to help when you are away?”

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about,” Nathan answered. “I had an idea I wanted to run by you before I talked to Allie. I know she is tired of staying at Opal’s house and really wants to sleep in her own bed, so I thought maybe you could stay at my house to be with Allie while I’m gone? I wasn’t sure how either of you would feel about it, but I want her to have stability in our home when I have to go away.”

A little speechless, Kathryn felt like this request was a major step in their relationship. “Are you sure this won’t be seen as inappropriate, having me sleep in your house?” She gave him an impish grin, her green eyes teasing him.

It wasn’t always easy to make a Mountie Inspector blush, but Nathan Grant was learning that Kate had that effect on him with just one look. “I think the fact that I’m not there makes it proper. I just kind of thought it would help you as much as Allie. I hear living with a newborn can make it more difficult to sleep. If you got some good rest at night, you would be fresh to help Anne during the day.”

Kathryn thought about the proposed arrangement and had to admit it sounded nice. As much as she had enjoyed her time living with her brother and sister-in-law, she knew they needed time to adjust to a newborn alone together. With things getting more serious with Nathan, time with Allie would be essential if she wanted to eventually become a real member of the Grant Family. She must have been deep in thought contemplating all these things for a bit too long without giving an answer, because she detected him getting nervous.

“Don’t feel obligated, it was just a thought.” Nathan stood up and ran his fingers through his hair, feeling self conscious from how overzealous he had been even suggesting such a thing this soon in their relationship. He felt her light touch on his back and turned around to face her smiling face looking up at him.

“I’m sorry I got lost in my thoughts for a minute,” Kathryn apologized. “I would be honored to stay with Allie for as many nights as you need. I think this plan works in favor of everyone involved. Plus, I want to build a relationship with the number one girl in your life.”

Letting out a huge sigh of relief, Nathan lifted Kate off the ground and twirled her around. “You made me sweat that one out, didn’t you?” he joked as he set her back on the ground and hugged her tight. “I’ll talk it over with Allie before we come over to help with dinner, but I think she will be excited.” He pressed a kiss on her temple and grabbed her hand, leading her toward the row houses.

“Wait,” Kathryn blurted, stopping him from heading home. “Your face when Mike took Jack out of church...I just need to understand your relationship with him...and Elizabeth.”

Caught a little off guard, Nathan wondered how best to express his feelings. “In my dream, Jack told me I wasn’t to blame for his or any of the other Mountie’s deaths. He also told me to move on with my life and find love, assuring me Elizabeth and little Jack would be ok. Now I don’t think every dream has deep meaning or is inspiration, but this one was very different. I finally feel at peace, and I’ve found love.” Nathan stroked her face with his hand, twisting a stray piece of hair between his fingers. “A part of me will always be connected to Elizabeth and little Jack, and I think the dream of raising a son was wrapped up in him from my first few years here in Hope Valley. But now I know what I really desire is my own family and children.”

Thinking about having children with Nathan had been on Kathryn’s mind since seeing him hold Elsie this morning. Hearing him at peace with the deaths of his fellow officers made her emotional and grateful. He was still playing with strands of her hair and brushing his hands across her cheek. She closed her eyes, enjoying his touch and just being with him before he had to leave again. “I’m sorry,” she replied, opening her eyes and looking into his. “I just needed to know how you felt, because I knew there was a bond and I wanted to be respectful of that.”

“Oh Kate,” he murmured. “It means everything to me that you care this deeply about how I feel.” Nathan moved his other hand behind her head and leaned down to kiss her lips earnestly. Her response filled his senses as he kissed her with all the love he had inside of him. When they finally pulled apart, Nathan had never been so sure of what he wanted for his future.

Kathryn still couldn’t believe this man that took her breath away actually loved her. His kiss had calmed her fears, but also increased her sadness that he would be gone possibly for days. She nuzzled into his chest and breathed in his masculine scent so she could hold onto that memory while separated from him. Kathryn wished time would freeze and she could stay in that moment.

Coming out of the church, Elizabeth found Hickam and little Jack playing by some trees and petting a stray dog. She smiled, watching how taken her son had become with Mike. As she walked to them, out of the corner of her eye she saw Nathan and Kathryn holding hands and leaving the church to take the long way home. Mixed emotions flooded Elizabeth, and she knew her days of being with a Mountie were over. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t find happiness again, and she was determined to be the best version of herself at the very least for her son.

“Mama!” little Jack yelled, running over to her with his little arms in the air and jumping into her arms. “I pway with Hickam! Wook, the doggie!”

Hickam smiled at the mother and son duo, and felt his heart pounding at an accelerated rate watching the most beautiful woman he had ever met interact with her little boy. No one really knew that his greatest desire was to have a family, especially now that his business ventures had taken off and he was quickly becoming one of the most successful businessmen in Hope Valley. But he was quickly learning that success only meant something if you had people to share it with. He knew Elizabeth was out of his league, but couldn’t help but be drawn to the little Thornton family and want to love and protect them.

“Mike, I really appreciate your help with this crazy little man,” Elizabeth thanked him as she wrestled with Jack who slipped out of her arms and ran back over to Hickam and the dog. “Would you like to join us for a picnic at the pond? I have more than enough food, and Jack is having so much fun with you. Only if you want to…”

In shock, Hickam was sure his mouth had been wide open as Elizabeth extended the invitation. “Honestly, that sounds perfect,” he finally stammered. “I was so busy with work I hadn’t even gone shopping for food this week so I was trying to figure out if I even had anything to eat in my house. That is so kind of you to invite me, and we had a great time playing outside together didn’t we Jack?” He tousled the little boy’s hair and smiled at how gentle the dog was with him even though children weren’t always gentle.

“Alright little man, why don’t we let the doggie go home and we can go have a picnic at the pond.” Suddenly the dog eyed a squirrel and ran off to chase it, disappearing into the trees. Elizabeth grabbed her son’s hand, Hickam held his other hand, and the three of them began walking to the row house to get the picnic basket and blanket. When they arrived at the house, Rosemary and Lee were just coming back outside to have their own picnic and they eyed the three of them with a curious look.

Jack burst free of those holding his hand and ran up to Lee and Rosemary, “I go on picnic with Hickam and Mama! I see a puppy!”

“Oh,” Rosemary eyed Elizabeth with a questioning look. “Well, that sounds like fun.” She gave little Jack a hug and kiss then walking by Elizabeth she whispered in her ear, “We are going to need to talk about this later.”

Lee smiled at his good friend Mike Hickam and gave him a little nudge of approval as he walked past him and joined Rosemary on the path heading into the clearing past the row houses. Hickam looked at Elizabeth who seemed a bit flustered, so he offered to keep little Jack entertained outside while she finished packing lunch. When she came out with a blanket and basket, he offered to carry both while they headed toward the pond. As they headed down the lane, Nathan and Kathryn were coming in the other direction holding hands and laughing.

Everyone was surprised when little Jack ran and jumped into Nathan’s arms, “‘ountie ‘atan! Going on picnic with Hickam and Mama!”

“That’s great,” Nathan acknowledged, gauging the situation and noticing the flushed faces of both Elizabeth and Hickam. “I hope you three have a lovely afternoon.”

“You as well,” Elizabeth sputtered. “Kathryn, give Anne and Thomas my congratulations on the birth of their sweet Elsie. I plan on making a meal for them, and you, tomorrow so let them know.”

“Thank you, Elizabeth, that is very sweet and I know it will be very appreciated.” Kathryn felt the awkwardness just like everyone and gave a quick wave before heading to the house she shared with her brother’s family.

At the pond, they spread out the blanket and arranged the food. All three of them ate in silence until Jack, who had been full of energy all morning long, suddenly got sleepy. He snuggled up to his mommy and fell asleep after eating about half of his food. Elizabeth wasn’t quite sure what she was thinking, inviting a man for a family outing when she was still trying to get over failed attempts at relationships with both Lucas and Nathan.

“I appreciate your invitation for lunch. Jack is such a special little boy, and I applaud you for what it takes for you to care for him on your own. I know you have help from people, but what people don’t know about me is that my dad died when I was a baby and my mom raised me alone. She was a very strong woman, just like you, and I’m forever grateful for good women who raise energetic little boys to be good men. I know she always wished someone would come into her life to help ease her burdens, but it wasn’t in the cards for her.”

“Your mom sounds like an incredible woman, Mike. You are the most compassionate, loyal, and caring man and I’m grateful for your steady presence in Hope Valley.” Elizabeth stroked her son’s blonde curls, wet with sweat as he slept on her lap. “I miss Jack every day, especially seeing so much of him in his son. I just feel like since he’s been gone I’ve been making a mess out of everything in my life and disappointing him and everyone else.” A single tear fell down Elizabeth’s face and she quickly brushed it away, embarrassed that she was so freely opening up to another man. “I’m sorry, I’m just not sure I’m any good at relationships anymore.”

Hickam struggled to know exactly how he should react in this situation, but he moved closer and covered Elizabeth’s free hand that was sitting on the blanket with his own. His pulse raced as their hands touched, but she didn’t resist or pull away. Instead she looked at him with wide eyes filled with wonder and maybe a little disbelief. “You don’t have anything to apologize for. I think we all go through times when we are unsure of ourselves. I know I have felt that way for most of my life. But now, having some success in the businesses I’ve been building over the past several years, I finally understand that I am capable of more than I ever thought possible. You are an excellent mother, an exceptional teacher, and you care about everyone in Hope Valley. I’ve admired your strength you’ve shown through great adversity.”

Speechless wasn’t something Elizabeth was often, but she had no words after hearing these surprising revelations by the last person in Hope Valley she ever expected to understand her and what she was going through. She studied Mike’s face, something she had never really done in the past, and she looked at him differently this time. He wasn’t flashy or charismatic like many of the men she had been with or attracted to in the past, but he had many qualities that were vital in any lasting relationship. Not to mention, he was handsome with a build that had become even more muscular with the hours he spent working hard with the men he oversaw in the oil business. He wasn’t just barking orders and wearing suits all day like Lucas did, although he spent part of his time in meetings while nicely dressed. But Hickam had become a well-respected leader who led by example.

Before anything else could be said, Jack woke up a little cranky and hot, wanting his own bed to finish his nap. “I guess we better get this guy home,” Elizabeth decided. They cleaned up the picnic and walked the short distance back to the row house, not saying much since little Jack was whining and refusing to walk. Hickam carried him as far as the porch, then after Elizabeth sat the picnic basket and blanket inside the door she took her son into her arms so she could go put him back down for a proper nap in his own bed. “Thank you, Mike. I hope we’ll see you again very soon.”

“Thanks again for lunch,” Hickam said, closing the door for her. He turned around to head back home, unsure of how he should feel after a very unexpected, yet very enjoyable picnic lunch with Elizabeth and little Jack Thornton.

Nathan left Kathryn at her house and went home to talk to Allie before going to help the Bradshaws make dinner. She was already gathering up ingredients and supplies to take with them when Nathan walked inside. “Hey there, Allie girl. Can we sit and talk for a minute before we finish getting ready to go?”

“Sure, Dad.” Allie sat in her favorite chair and Nathan sat in front of her on the footstool. “What’s going on?”

“I have to go out of town again to finish my investigation with Gabe this week,” he began. “But I know you talked to Kate, um Miss Bradshaw, about wanting to sleep in your own bed when I’m gone. That’s why I’ve asked her if she could stay here with you while I’m gone. She has agreed to the arrangement, but only if you feel good about it and don’t think it is rushing a relationship with her.”

A huge smile spread across Allie’s face. “Are you serious? I love Opal and her family, but I really do want to stay home while you are gone. Does this mean I get to also go be with the Bradshaws for meals and get to help take care of the baby? I accept this plan, even though I will miss you and hope this mission doesn’t take too long.” She moved into his arms and gave him a big hug.

Relief swept over Nathan and he kissed Allie’s forehead, feeling good about leaving her with Kate while he was gone. “Now that we have it all settled, let’s get going.” He helped her get the rest of the items and went up the street to help get dinner started.

Monday morning dawned clear and bright, and Kathryn was out the door at sunrise to meet Nathan at his house. She found him drinking coffee on the front porch, awaiting her arrival. Newton was already out front so he could leave as soon as he got her settled at his house. She stopped to pet his horse, before joining him, and noticed he had a second steaming cup waiting for her. “Good morning,” he greeted, admiring how beautiful she looked first thing in the morning.  She was wearing a light blue dress, and her hair had been brushed but not styled like usual, due to the early hour.

“Good morning,” she echoed, smiling at Nathan’s tousled hair and admiring him in his civilian clothes with suspenders that she had been accustomed to seeing him in more often as his Inspector duties made wearing red serge a less frequent occurrence. “Thanks for the coffee, I didn’t want to wake up anyone in the house by making some at home.” She took a sip, and settled down next to Nathan, who finished off his mug and set it down.

“I need to get going, but I wanted to see you and make sure you had everything you needed. I put new sheets on my bed for you...I just thought you would be more comfortable in there. Allie will sleep a few more hours then get up for breakfast and do some chores and read before heading to her shift at the switchboard. She can make her own lunch to take with her, so then she’s planning to go to your house for dinner and wants to help with the baby before coming back here and getting ready for bed.” Nathan stood up, and Kate put her mug down and stood with him.

“We’ll be fine, Nathan,” she croaked, trying to hold her emotions in check. “Just worry about staying safe, and know things at home are taken care of just fine.” A few tears escaped, but she hid them by burying her head on Nathan’s shoulder.

He wrapped her tightly in his arms and kissed her head, also fighting tears and holding back the dread he felt having to leave his girls behind. “Thank you for watching out for Allie and for being my support and strength always.” Nathan took her face in his strong hands and looked her in the eyes. “I love you, Kate. I’ll be home as soon as I possibly can.” He kissed her quickly, and before he could change his mind about leaving, went to Newton and mounted.

Kathryn followed him over and looked up to him. “I love you, Nathan. Take care of yourself.”

Nathan urged Newton forward and waved his last goodbye to Kate. She waved back and watched him ride out of sight, staying on the porch sipping her coffee until the sun was completely up in the sky. Sighing heavily, she went inside Nathan’s row house to make breakfast for herself and Allie, hoping Nathan’s case would be solved soon and he would be back home with them where he belonged.
