Granting a Family - Chapter 35: City Life

Trials were Nathan’s least favorite part of his job, at least the testifying part of them. He did get satisfaction in seeing criminals be brought to justice and sentenced to pay their debt to society. His biggest worry with convicts like the Rutherford Gang, was their complete disregard for life especially among members of law enforcement. Sometimes he would get concerned that if they either broke out of prison or were let out for other reasons, they would find him and seek retaliation. Julius Spurlock was the perfect example of someone who tried to avenge his brother’s incarceration by making Elizabeth pay. But even Spurlock wasn’t a known murderer, which made the Rutherfords even that much more dangerous. Nathan thought about how the past few months had changed him, and re-evaluated his objectives in life. Keep the town safe, and raise Allie was now expanding to: Keep the town safe, raise Allie...and now protect, love, and honor Kate as a loving husband.

His name being called pulled Nathan out of his thoughts, and he saw three sets of evil eyes turn back and look directly at him in his Inspector uniform, complete with a freshly pressed red serge jacket that Allie had made sure was pristine for his appearance in court. He made his way to the witness stand at the front of the courtroom with an air of confidence and authority and a serious, commanding expression on his face. He took the oath to tell the truth, read his statement, then took questions from the prosecution. It was the end of the day before they got to Nathan, so when the judge adjourned for the evening, he knew the next day would start with him being cross examined by the defense attorney.

Nathan rushed out of the courtroom, and once outside found his driver Jim waiting right on time to pick him up and take him to his boarding house to change, then to the Clements home for dinner with Anne’s family along with Kate and Allie. Once inside the car, he unbuttoned and slipped off his serge to try and cool down after a stifling day in the courthouse. Temperatures were higher than normal, even for the middle of July. He thanked his driver and promised to be back out in the next fifteen minutes ready to go. Inside his room, he freshened up and picked out his blue navy suit, light blue shirt and patterned tie. He combed his hair to fix the damage his inspector hat and sweat had done during the day. He looked at himself in the mirror, finally satisfied he could fit in well enough at the fancy dinner he would be attending. Nathan hoped to impress Anne’s family, but also not to embarrass Kate by being dressed too informally.

Jim was reading a newspaper when Nathan returned to the car, and eyed the Mountie - turned gentleman - with curiosity. “Sir, or should I call you Inspector?” the driver wondered. “Are you ready to go to the Clements’ home?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he said mostly under his breath. “And you can call me Nathan. I’m not one for formalities, Mr. Reynold,” he smirked.

“If that’s the case, you can call me Jim. It has been a pleasure to drive you and your family around. I appreciate the way you have all treated me like an equal, unlike most people I drive for in this city. Superintendent Lewis is a family friend, so I was able to get him a reasonable rate to drive around his hero Mountie for a few days.”

Nathan blushed at the mention of him being a hero. “I don’t consider myself heroic,” he admitted. “I was just doing my job and trying to keep our territory and communities safe. I’m very glad to meet a friend of the good Superintendent, who has been a great example to me through the years. I appreciate you keeping my daughter and fiancé safe while moving them from one side of town to another.”

“Both very pleasant ladies,” Jim confirmed, not wanting to pry, and needing to start the car and begin driving. They stayed silent for most of the drive, both men absorbed in their own thoughts and neither being extremely talkative by nature. As they pulled up to the large “mansion” as Allie called it, Nathan took a good look at the large estate for the first time in full daylight. He had never been very comfortable around wealth, and wasn’t sure he would have ever been accepted by Elizabeth’s family with their sizable fortune and status. Although Kate had rich relatives, she grew up on a humble farm her entire childhood, before spending most of her teen years traveling with her aunt and getting her education. Knowing how down to earth Thomas was, helped him gain an ever greater understanding and appreciation for the kind of people the Bradshaws were. He had to admit that seeing the kind of life Anne had lived before marrying Thomas, surprised him. Anne was the sweetest person who didn’t seem to need worldly goods to make her happy.

Nerves threatened to rattle Nathan as he straightened his tie and absentmindedly ran his fingers through his hair. “Here goes nothing,” he breathed, feeling his heart pounding a little harder than usual. Jim opened the door and let him out, then he immediately saw two familiar figures move toward him. “Thanks for the ride, Jim. I guess we’ll see you back here at 9:00?” With a wink and a smile, Jim nodded his head as he closed the door, then got in and drove away.

Forgetting her city manners, Allie ran over and wrapped Nathan in a big hug. “Dad, you made it!” She pulled back and twirled around. “Do you like my new dress Aunt Kathryn bought me while we were out shopping today?”

Nathan admired Allie in her new blush colored evening gown with way more ruffles and lace than her normal wardrobe ever had. He also noticed her hair was up and curled professionally, making her look much older than her thirteen years. “You look beautiful, Allie girl. It’s just a good thing Robert isn’t here to see you like this, or I really would send him straight off to Mountie training.”

Rolling her eyes, Allie groaned. “Daaaad!” she complained, but smiled inwardly to have impressed him with the way she looked.

Watching the scene play out in front of her, Kathryn felt the love in her heart expand even more for both her future husband and daughter. Spending the day with Allie shopping for new dresses and getting their hair done, had gotten her even more excited to be an official member of the Grant family. “Allie, sweetie, can you go up to my room and grab our gloves off my vanity, then meet us back here to walk in the front door together? Maggie will let you in that side door we came out of just barely.” Allie nodded and disappeared.

Nathan couldn’t keep his eyes off Kate since he saw her come from behind a tree in the courtyard. She was wearing a new dress that they probably found on their shopping trip that day as well. A stylish silver and black evening gown with navy accents sparkled in the remaining sunlight. It hit her curves in all the right places and took Nathan’s breath away. Her hair was also styled in an attractive up-do with sparkling hair pins arranged throughout her golden curls. She wore silver jewelry with stunning blue sapphires that perfectly matched her dress. He imagined if she had been wearing white, this is very much what she might look like on their wedding day. At that thought, he caught his breath and felt his heart suddenly beat faster.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Kathryn asked, approaching him. “You look so handsome in that suit. I’m sure you knew I would love it because it matches your brilliant blue eyes.” She straightened his tie and smoothed his suit jacket, letting her hands slip down and end up in his.

Finally able to find his voice, Nathan responded, “Kate, you are absolutely stunning and it made me a little speechless.” He squeezed her hands and stepped closer to her, closing the gap. “Thank you for spending time with Allie. She didn’t really need a new dress, but I can tell she had a really great time with you today. I know you are going to make a wonderful mother.” He released one of her hands and caressed her face, running his thumb over her lips before leaning down and pressing his lips to hers in a sweet, yet intense kiss. She moved both hands behind his neck, enjoying every second of being alone together. As they pulled apart, they sighed and looked into each other’s eyes.

Suddenly, Kathryn remembered why she needed to talk to Nathan before going inside. “I almost forgot why I came out here before you went inside to meet Anne’s family before dinner. My Aunt Edith called the Clements and agreed to come to dinner with us tonight!” She suddenly looked nervous and began pacing back and forth in front of Nathan. “I’m not sure what to expect,” she continued. “I haven’t seen her in a few years, and she was so set against my marrying a Mountie when I talked to her the other day. I’m not sure what changed her mind about seeing me here in Union City, but now I’m anxious.”

Just then, Allie appeared with the formal gloves they bought to match their dresses for dinner. “I think I’m going to be underdressed here,” Nathan worried. “I’m not sure what your aunt will think of me, but all I can be is myself. Why don’t we go inside? Anne’s family can’t be that bad, just knowing how sweet and kind she is to everyone.”

“Come on, Dad. You have to see this house, and the family is very kind just like Anne.” Allie took Nathan by one hand and Kathryn by the other. She led them up the stairs to the front entrance, forcing them both to face whatever would come with Aunt Edith. Allie rang the doorbell and waited for the butler, Mr. Sullivan, to open the front door and let them into the foyer.

Kathryn looked over at Nathan, searching his eyes to see if he felt as uneasy as she did. She wasn’t sure if it was his Mountie training or if he really wasn’t phased by this evening’s dinner, but the one thing that was certain was that Allie’s excitement was palpable just like it had been all day long as they had explored the city and gone shopping together. Kathryn felt so much love for the spunky teenager, and was excited at the prospect of being the mother to her that she never got to have at that age. Aunt Edith gave her culture and experiences money could buy, but never gave her the same closeness and love she had with her mother before she passed away. She knew Nathan did the best he could and was a wonderful father to Allie, but these crucial years of becoming a woman might be easier on her with another woman to help her navigate through them.

Mr. Sullivan opened the door and motioned for them to move into the large entryway. Nathan had been to a few fancy buildings in his life, but it was rare for him to be invited into the home of people with the kind of wealth it took to have a grand home in the city like this one. He gazed around in awe, looking at the fine décor, including a fancy crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Allie had let go of his and Kate’s hands and was admiring her surroundings, even though she had seen the house already.

“Sully, I would like you to meet my fiancé Nathan Grant,” she affectionately said to the butler. She turned to Nathan and explained, “I’ve known Sully, Mr. Sullivan, for many years since Anne and Thomas first got together. He is a good friend and like a grandfather to me.”

Nathan held out his hand to shake the older man’s hand. “Any friend of Kate’s is a friend of mine,” he stated, with an affectionate look at his beautiful soon-to-be bride. “This house and the entire estate is impressive.”

“It is very nice to meet the great hero Inspector,” Sully joked with a wink. “I’ve heard many great things about you from Kathryn, and if your daughter is a reflection on your character, I definitely approve.”

Before Nathan could respond, Mr. and Mrs. Clements walked in to greet their new guest. He immediately saw the resemblance to Anne, especially in her mother who was petite and had the same dark hair and eyes, along with the same warm presence. She immediately approached Nathan and surprised him with an exuberant hug. “Welcome to our home, Inspector Grant. We have heard so much about you, not only from Kathryn, but from Thomas and Anne as well. Thank you for being so good to them as they have been settling into Hope Valley. We have been trying to get some things resolved here so we can go visit our new granddaughter very soon. Of course we wanted to let everyone recover before company showed up.”

Yep, Nathan thought to himself, she has the same genuine talkative personality as her daughter. He turned his attention to Mr. Clements, noticing he was more reserved, but had a look of kindness and meekness about him. He moved beside his wife, holding out his hand to shake Nathan’s and his other hand on the back of his wife. “John Clements,” he introduced himself. “My wife Mae and I are thrilled to have you finally in our home, so we can see who has captured the heart of Kathryn, who has been like a daughter to us for some time. Allie is quite the young lady as well, and we are very appreciative to all who serve in law enforcement. How is your current court case moving along? I read in the papers you are in Union City to testify, and to receive a very high award for your brave efforts in capturing those gangsters.”

Face turning red with embarrassment at the praise he was receiving, Nathan acknowledged their compliments then tried to move to a different topic without offending them. “I’ll be back in court tomorrow to finish my testimony, and Wednesday I will be at the Mountie Headquarters for some unwarranted recognition. Honestly, I was just doing my job, and I’m glad we got those evil men off the streets so they won’t terrorize anyone else. Thank you for your hospitality to Allie today and to me this evening for dinner. You have a very beautiful home, Mr. and Mrs. Clements. And I can see where Anne gets her gracious and loving nature.”

“Oh, please call us Aunt Mae and Uncle John,” Mae insisted. “We are basically family now, and we really don’t like all the formalities people like to push because of money and social status.” Before they could continue their conversation or move into the sitting room to visit before dinner was served, the doorbell sounded and Kathryn immediately stiffened.

Sully moved to the door and opened it, revealing an attractive and seemingly fiery middle aged woman that had a strong resemblance to Kathryn. She blew in like a strong gust of wind and immediately made her way over to where her niece was clutching the hand of a tall and attractive man, but one who was woefully underdressed for the taste of Miss Edith Sharp. She also saw a lanky teenage girl in a fashionable dress and gloves, and assumed she was the adopted daughter of the Mountie, who had won the heart of the woman who was like the only daughter she ever had.

Rubbing his thumb against her clammy hand to help calm Kate down, Nathan stood up tall and confident, ready to face the woman who was against their union. “Miss Sharp, Nathan Grant. This is my daughter Allie,” he said, motioning to where she stood. “I’ve heard so much about you from Kathryn.” He held out his hand, and though she looked skeptical, she let him take her hand. He noticed her eyes widen as he lifted her gloved hand and lightly placed a kiss on it before releasing it gently.

Kathryn was trying to stay composed and stop the trembling that threatened to overtake her, impressed by Nathan’s calm demeanor and handling of her sometimes difficult aunt. She loved Aunt Edith, and knew if she would just take time to get to know Nathan and Allie, she would see why she had chosen them to be her family. Timidly, she moved closer to her aunt, not sure how she would respond. “Aunt Edith, it’s so good to see you!” Suddenly not caring what she thought, Kathryn wrapped her in a tight embrace.

Realizing she had no reason to stay upset, Edith reciprocated the hug. “My dear Kathryn, you look well. It seems country life is treating you better than I expected. Nathan and Allie, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” She turned slightly, addressing her hosts. “John and Maeble, thank you for inviting me this evening.”

“Our pleasure, Edith dear,” Aunt Mae replied, just as Maggie appeared to inform them the dining room was ready and dinner would soon be served.

Allie watched the older women and tried to mimic the way they walked, holding their gloved hands properly. She couldn't wait to tell her friends about spending time with Anne’s family and having dinner in a bigger house than she had ever been in before. She followed the adults into the dining room, staying close to her Dad and soon-to-be mom. Her eyes got bigger as she took in the fancy room with a large mahogany table. Place settings of fine china and crystal glasses sat on a beautiful white tablecloth. John took his place at the head of the table, and the rest of the guests sat on either side of him.

They were served a full four course meal consisting of a creamy tomato soup, bruschetta as an appetizer, chicken and pasta for the main course, and chocolate mousse pie for dessert. Everyone chatted politely during dinner, and Edith had warmed up significantly to Nathan Grant...even with his less formal, yet ruggedly handsome blue suit, instead of a more formal tuxedo like the one John Clements wore. He was polite, more educated and well read than she would have expected from a Mountie, and she couldn’t deny the love that radiated from him and Kathryn or the closeness they shared with Allie, his once niece - now adopted daughter. Regret began spilling into her heart at the way she reacted when she first learned the news of Katie’s engagement. She wanted the very best for her sister’s baby girl that she helped raise during her impressionable teen years. Truth be told, it wasn’t that she thought money was the most important quality her niece could find in a man. She really just wanted to make sure he was the right man, with a good heart and the ability to take care of her. Sitting across the table from them told her everything she needed to know. Lightly tapping her glass, she called for a toast. “To friends and family being reunited. And to Nathan and Kathryn on their engagement. May they have every joy and happiness in their new life together.”

Trying to not let her jaw hit the ground, Kathryn lifted her glass as they all answered, “Here, here.” She wondered what had changed Aunt Edith’s mind since the phone call the other day, but decided she would just be grateful things were going as well as they were. She wished Anne’s brother David had been able to make it, but he was out of town on business with his soon-to-be father-in-law. She was pleased to introduce the love of her life to people who were so important to her. Squeezing Nathan’s hand, he looked into her eyes like he was trying to figure out what she was feeling, but she just smiled to let him know everything was perfectly fine.

“Aunt Edith,” Allie blurted. “Uh, if it’s ok that I call you that. I was wondering if you are going to come to Hope Valley for the wedding?”

Everyone collectively gasped and waited for Edith’s reply. She smiled at Allie, the spunk reminding her a lot of both Kathryn and herself. “Well, have you two set a wedding date?” she inquired, looking at the happy couple. “I am leaving to spend the winter in California with friends at the end of September, so if the wedding is before that I wouldn’t miss going. Although, I am surprised you are having your wedding in a town you just moved to recently.”

“We haven’t set a wedding date,” Nathan conceded. “In fact, I can’t say that we have decided to get married in Hope Valley either. We just got engaged, then immediately had to plan our trip to come to Union City, so there hasn’t been time to make plans.” He looked over at Kate who looked a little stunned, but he gave her hand a slight squeeze under the table encouraging her to join the conversation. “This is your wedding, love. What are your thoughts on the matter?”

At the mention of their wedding, Kathryn felt her heart speed up and blushed when everyone looked at her expectantly. “Well, it’s not my wedding, it’s our wedding, so I hope we can make plans together,” she answered, a big grin forming as she thought about marrying the best looking and most wonderful man she had ever known. “I know we’ve talked about not having a long engagement, and secretly I’ve always dreamed of a September wedding because it is such a beautiful time of year. School starts on the 15th, so if we got married on Saturday, the 6th of September, that would give us a week to go on a honeymoon before I would have to be back to teach. I may have looked at a calendar after we got officially engaged to look at possible dates. If I’m married before the school year starts, students can call me Mrs. Grant from the beginning and that would be less confusing. I most definitely would love to be married in Hope Valley, which is our home and where we fell in love.”

“It sounds like we have a wedding date!” Nathan announced. “Only eight weeks away!”

Allie clapped her hands and squealed, then put a hand over her mouth when she realized she was not engaging in proper ladylike behavior. Everyone at the table just laughed and congratulated the couple once again. “Can we go shopping for the wedding while we’re still in the city?” Allie asked.

“I have some free time tomorrow,” Edith unexpectedly stated. “I’ve always wanted to buy you the most beautiful and stylish wedding gown anyone has ever seen. I know just the shop here in Union City that gets shipments in from Paris with all of the latest designs that most people won’t see until next year. Please let me do this for you. It would give us some girl time to talk and go to lunch, and Allie is very welcome to join us.”

Kathryn looked at Allie who was doing her best to contain her excitement and keep her refined behavior. “I think Allie and I would love to join you tomorrow, Aunt Edith.”

“Wonderful! I’ll have my car pick you up here at 10:00 tomorrow morning.” Edith felt like a child on Christmas Eve, excited to share these special moments with her sweet little Katie who was all grown up and about to be a bride.

After everyone was finished with dessert, they moved to the sitting room where Aunt Mae insisted Kathryn perform on the piano for everyone. Nathan and Allie were stunned as she took command of the instrument with a very demanding Chopin concerto. Everyone clapped when she finished, and she dramatically gave a bow which caused the group to chuckle.

Sitting back down beside Nathan, he looked at her with an inquisitive grin. “I guess I don’t know everything about you,” he professed. “When did you become a concert pianist?”

Shyly, Kathryn blushed. “I’m not a concert pianist, but my mother had a piano in our home when I was growing up and taught me to play. Aunt Edith made sure I had lessons with the best pianists in the country and abroad...wherever we were living at the time. I used to play the Clements’ piano whenever I was at their house, but sadly Hope Valley hasn’t afforded me much of an opportunity beyond a few times when I was alone in the schoolhouse. And that piano is not the greatest instrument.”

Nathan made sure no one was focused on them, as they were all engaged in conversation with one another, before he leaned over to brush his lips against Kate’s cheek. He truly had found a treasure of a woman to be his wife. He looked at the clock, shocked to see that Jim would be picking them up in just ten minutes. “Allie, our driver will be here soon. We better say our goodbyes now so we can get back to the boarding house and get to bed.” They thanked the Clements, and Sully opened the door for the rest of them. Jim was already waiting for Nathan and Allie, and Edith’s driver was there to take her back home as well. “Goodnight, Kate,” he whispered in her ear as he pulled her behind a pillar where no one could see them.

“I miss you already,” Kathryn murmured, then looking around to make sure they had a moment of privacy she reached up and kissed him warmly and longingly. Pulling back quicker than normal, to not leave Jim waiting she breathed, “I can’t believe in less than two months we will be married. Please be safe, and good luck at your trial tomorrow. Before I forget, I have a surprise for you. Aunt Mae was able to pull some strings and get you, me, and Allie tickets to the theatre tomorrow night! Pirates of Penzance is being performed, and I know you and Allie are going to love it. I thought we could meet for dinner at that fancy restaurant before the play.”

A horn honked and Nathan knew his driver and daughter were getting impatient. “It sounds like fun, but I better get going before Jim drives off without me.” He gave her a quick kiss and hurried to the car that took them back to the boarding house for the night.

By the time Nathan’s cross examination was over, he had a headache that wouldn’t go away. He was already in a bad mood from having to stare down the evil men from the Rutherford Gang, and he just wanted the trial to be over so they could be sentenced to life in prison and stop terrorizing their communities. His head pounded harder the longer he sat in the courtroom. Luckily, testimony ended by lunch and when they all returned from the mealtime recess, they were all given a guilty verdict and sentenced to high security prison for life, due to their murders of civilians and law enforcement officers.

Nathan still had several hours before he had to meet the girls for dinner and the theatre, so he decided to go back to the boarding house to hopefully sleep off the headache before getting cleaned up and changed for their evening out on the town. On his way inside, he took a seat in the dining hall and requested some tea that he knew might help with the pain, then went right up to his room and fell fast asleep.

When Kathryn stepped on the pedestal in the fifth dress she had tried on and looked into the large mirror, she caught her breath. Behind her she heard gasps from Aunt Edith and Allie both. She felt the intricate beading and detail work with her fingers as she marveled at the way the dress fit her small frame and accentuated her natural beauty. “I think this is the one,” she was barely able to vocalize.

“Katie, it’s so stunning!” Edith exclaimed. “This is one of the styles coming out for the new decade, and I’m sure no one in Hope Valley will have worn anything quite so modern and gorgeous. I think you have a couple more to try on, but this is definitely a contender.”

Allie stood up and admired Kathryn, having never seen such an exquisite dress in her entire life. “My Dad is going to go crazy when he sees you on your wedding day,” she assured her.

After trying on the other dresses, they all agreed that the fifth dress was the one. Aunt Edith paid for the dress, and they took measurements so they could alter the dress to fit her perfectly. Not many changes were necessary, so the seamstress in the shop told them she could have it ready in a couple of hours. They decided to go eat lunch together, then they would stop and pick up the dress before heading back home.

Lunch together at a little French café was enjoyable for all three of them. Kathryn realized how much she missed her aunt, and Allie was having the time of her life. When they finished eating, they stopped to pick up the altered wedding dress, then Edith’s driver dropped Allie and Kathryn back off at the Clements so they could rest before getting ready for their night out with Nathan.

“Thank you for the marvelous dress,” Kathryn thanked her aunt with a hug. “It was wonderful spending time with you today, and I know Allie enjoyed it as well. I’m just curious what changed your mind about Nathan.”

“Oh my dear,” Edith uttered. “I am just protective of my favorite girl. You are like my own daughter, and my beautiful sister Elsie’s youngest child. I only want what’s best for you. After seeing you with Inspector Nathan Grant, and witnessing the love shining in your eyes and in your countenances, how could I not believe the two of you were meant to be together? Also, knowing of his selflessness at taking in his niece and adopting her as a single man, not to mention a busy Mountie, and to see what a wonderful young lady she is...that speaks volumes about the man. He will take care of you, I have no doubt in my mind.”

Tears were shining in Kathryn’s eyes, knowing she had the blessing of the woman who helped her get an education and travel the world. “Thank you, Aunt Edith. I only hope I can be what Allie needs in her life. I can’t wait to see you again in September.” They hugged again and Kathryn watched her aunt drive off, feeling a sense of excitement about her future.

Nathan was grateful the tea and nap had cured his headache by the time he woke up and dressed for their special night. He met up with Allie and Kate at the same fancy restaurant he had taken Allie to the night they saw The Tempest at the theatre they would be attending again. Both ladies did a double take when they saw Nathan in a black tuxedo, and Kathryn felt shivers of attraction run through her at the sight of the best looking man she had ever encountered. They met one another with a quick kiss and Allie rolled her eyes, but took both of their hands and led them inside to their table. They talked and laughed and felt like a real family.

As they entered the theatre, Nathan’s mind flashed back to the time he came here with Allie and noticed Kate from a distance. So much had changed since that night. Pirates of Penzance had them all laughing and wanting to sing along. When it was over, they were all exhausted from their long day. Jim dropped Kate off and then continued back to the boarding house. Allie fell asleep on Nathan’s shoulder and he relished her closeness, knowing he only had a few years left with her before she would move away and begin her own life as an adult. He wanted to keep her his little girl for as long as possible.

Kathryn beamed with pride as Nathan received his medal of honor at Mountie Headquarters the next afternoon. Allie sat next to her with a smile that covered the entire width of her face. They both knew Nathan never liked getting recognition for doing his job, but even he seemed to get emotional when his medal was pinned on his Inspector uniform serge. A few other Mountie’s were honored, including Gabe Windslow, who helped Nathan catch the Rutherford Gang. He hadn’t needed to testify in the trial, having given a statement, and not being the one who actually arrested the men. He came into town the night before, and planned to stay for a couple of days for required training following the award ceremony.

After receiving congratulations from everyone at headquarters, then thanking Superintendent Lewis for the accommodations and the use of his friend Jim as a driver, Nathan took Kate and Allie to lunch at the Cardinal Café. They talked and laughed about their memories in Union City when Nathan was at Inspector Training and Kathryn was teaching at Advanced Learning Academy while Allie attended there for those weeks. It seemed like forever ago, and yet like just the other day. Food at the café was just as good as they all remembered, and they reflected on the week they just had in the city.

“Well, you’ve now experienced the city in a different way. What do you think Allie, do you wish I had taken that Inspector job a few years ago and moved to Union City?” Nathan questioned.

She thought for a moment and shook her head. “Nope! I’m glad we stayed in Hope Valley, even though things were hard for a while. But now you made your goal of becoming Inspector, and we found Aunt Kathryn who loves our town as much as we do. Visiting the city is fun, but after a few days all I want is to go home.”

Home, Kathryn thought to herself. She had never considered anywhere but her parent’s farm to really be home until she moved to Hope Valley and fell in love with Nathan Grant. It felt good to have a place where she finally belonged again. “I can’t wait to go back home tomorrow,” she agreed. All three of them watched people bustle past them on the busy city street, as thoughts of home filled their minds.

Granting a Family - Chapter 34: What Was & What Will Be

Walking back to the row houses newly engaged, Kathryn held out her hand to admire the ring Nathan had put on her finger. It glistened in the sun, and she squeezed her new fiancé's hand that she was holding while letting out a blissful sigh. “Will you tell me more about this ring? It looks like an antique, so I assume it is a family heirloom?” Kathryn guessed.

“Yes, it was my maternal grandmother’s ring,” Nathan answered. “I think it was meant for my sister Colleen, but when she brought Dylan home, my mother refused to let him anywhere near family belongings worth any money. He would have just pawned it off, and we would have never seen it again. It would have never survived my dad, but Mom had kicked him out before Grandma passed away and left the ring to her. When I took in Allie, she gave me the ring and told me to give it to the woman who captured my heart and would give me the kind of marriage Grandpa and Grandma Mayes had. They were happily married for 40 years before Grandpa died, so I think it is a good luck charm for a long and happy marriage.”

Kathryn abruptly stopped and pulled Nathan into her for a hug. A few tears escaped her eyes that she let fall on his shirt as she mourned his difficult childhood and family life. She pulled back and looked him in the eyes, so he knew she meant what she said. “Nathan, you are a good and honorable man. I know your mother did the best she could, and I know your father has been trying to make amends, but it still must hurt. I’m so sorry that Colleen chose a man who wasn’t respectable and honest like you are, or someone she and Allie deserved.”

Emotion brimmed to the surface, and Nathan let himself feel the pain he had tried to suppress for so many years. Now he had someone to lean on, who loved him and would help him through the pain of his past. He let tears stream down his face, holding his love close while allowing her to comfort and uphold him. “What did I do to deserve a woman like you in my life, Kate?” he murmured, stroking her hair as her head rested against his chest. “Thank you for being so understanding, and always loving me even though I don’t always deserve it.”

Lifting her head to look up at him, Kathryn wiped Nathan’s tears away and moved to bridge the gap between them so she could express how she felt about him with a heartfelt kiss. His response sent shivers down her spine, and made her long for the day she was his wife. When they finally pulled apart in need of oxygen, both of them looked a little dazed and decided they best be going back home. “Nathan,” she finally voiced. “You have always and will forever merit as much love and devotion as I can possibly give. I’m so glad you feel comfortable sharing your heart with me, and trusting it in my care. I promise to always safeguard and protect it to the best of my ability.”

“Kate, your heart is the most precious thing I have ever desired to possess and protect. We are so blessed to have been brought together, and I have no doubt in my mind that God had a hand in leading us to each other. I am finally getting a real family, which is the only thing I’ve wanted for such a long time. Now, let’s go tell Allie then Thomas and Anne. I’m certain they will all be just as thrilled as we are.” He picked up the basket holding the muffins and empty thermos in one hand and took Kate’s hand with the other. They picked up the pace, walking purposefully toward the row houses with a sense of excitement.

Allie woke up a little later than usual to a completely silent house. She slowly made her way downstairs, the sun flooding through the window facing east. Moving to the kitchen for a drink of water and to find some breakfast, Allie noticed a note on the counter.

Allie girl,

I went out for a little while early in the morning. Be back soon.

Love,

Dad

She rolled her eyes and thought to herself, Probably just some date with Miss Bradshaw or something. Her stomach started growling louder, so Allie decided to make a nice breakfast of bacon, eggs, and pancakes for when her dad returned from his morning...whatever it was. Just as she was flipping another round of pancakes, she heard giggling while the door flew open and in walked her dad with her teacher.

“Allie, you’re up!” Nathan exclaimed. “It smells great, did you make all that food for yourself?” He walked over and snuck a piece of bacon that he threw in his mouth, with his daughter scowling at him.

“I made plenty for both you and Miss Bradshaw,” she quipped. “But why don’t you get washed up first and set the table for me? I mean, who raised who in this relationship?”

Nathan waited for her to put the last pancake on the serving tray before he pulled her away from the kitchen and into the living area. He sat her down in a chair, motioning for Kate to sit beside him across from Allie. “Before we eat, there is something Kate and I want to tell you.”

Allie’s eyes immediately shot over to Kathryn’s left hand, and seeing her great grandmother’s ring on her finger caused her to shriek with delight. “Dad! You finally asked Miss Bradshaw to marry you!” She jumped over and tackled Nathan in a huge embrace, before somewhat timidly looking over at Kathryn. After seeing a huge smile, she instantly embraced the woman who would soon be her new mom. “I can’t believe I’m finally getting a real family! And soon I’ll get my very own brothers and sisters…”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Nathan held up his hands to slow her down. “Let’s take it one step at a time here. I wasn’t even expecting to propose today, so I think we need to start by getting used to the idea of being engaged and planning the wedding. But we can’t even do that until we are back from Union City next week.”

Having remained silent through the entire exchange so far, Kathryn finally spoke. “Oh that’s right! I almost forgot about going to Union City in two days! We have so much to get ready tomorrow.” She turned to Allie and put her hand over her soon-to-be daughter’s. “I am thrilled to be a part of your family. I love you and your Dad more than I can put into words. Having your blessing makes it even more special for me.”

Grinning from ear-to-ear, Allie pulled both of them in for a group hug. She looked over at the food that was going to go cold if they didn’t eat soon and suggested, “Can we take breakfast over to the Bradshaw’s house to eat? I made enough for all of us, and you need to share the news with them.”

“That sounds like a perfect plan, Allie. Let’s all gather it up and take it over there.” They put dish towels over the trays of food and each took one of them to carry. “I can’t believe Anne and Thomas will be my aunt and uncle and Elsie my very own baby cousin!”

Kathryn looked at Nathan, so proud that she would soon call him her husband, but also in awe of the amazing young woman he had raised since she was very young. She hoped that joining their family would only add to their happiness and help make them an even better family unit. “I want you both to know how much I love you. Thank you for accepting and loving me. I wondered how you both felt about Allie calling me something besides Miss Bradshaw, since that seems too formal for what our relationship is now. I hope one day after we’re married you may want to call me Mom, Allie. But until then, I was thinking something like ‘Aunt Kathryn’? You called your Dad ‘Uncle Nathan’ until the adoption was final, so I felt like it would be appropriate.”

Allie looked at Nathan for approval and he nodded, eyes glistening with affection for both of his beautiful girls and their goodness. All three of them were trying to keep their emotions from spilling out, so they turned their attention back to the food trays they held and started walking the short distance to the Bradshaw’s row house. As they approached the front door, Thomas appeared on Midnight. He dismounted and tied the horse to the porch railing, hurrying up the stairs and opening the door for them since they had their hands full.

“What is all this?” Thomas asked curiously. “Not that I’m complaining. I just finished my rounds and came to get breakfast for me and Anne, but it looks like my lucky day.”

Hearing people downstairs, Anne slowly walked down carrying little Elsie who was awake looking around at everyone and making cute little baby squeaks. Allie set down her tray of food and rushed over. “Hello Allie,” Anne greeted. “Would you like to hold the baby for me while I get a drink and kiss my husband?”

Allie nodded and gently took baby Elsie in her arms and moved to a comfy chair to sit and admire the sweet bundle of joy. “I think Dad and Miss, um well, they have something to say.” She looked over and winked at them both, encouraging them to make their announcement.

Thomas and Anne, who had just greeted each other with a quick kiss, suddenly turned around to face Nathan and Kathryn who couldn’t stop smiling or contain their excitement. “Did you finally ask her, Nathan?” Anne excitedly asked.

Kathryn held up her hand, revealing the beautiful antique ring and causing Anne to squeal in delight and hurry over to hug her sister-in-law and then her future brother-in-law. Thomas joined his wife, patting Nathan on the back, then swinging his little sister around in celebration. “Welcome to the family, Nathan and Allie,” Anne proclaimed. “I can’t wait to hear all about the proposal! Planning the wedding is going to be so much fun, but what I really want right now is to eat that breakfast I can smell.”

Everyone chuckled and moved into the kitchen to dish up plates of food. Allie was content to hold Elsie while the adults sat and ate at the table. As she held the baby, she dreamed of the day she would get her very own little sibling. Anne admired the ring shaped like a rose, and savored every detail of the engagement, as Kathryn told the story of how it happened. They also discussed the upcoming trip to Union City that Nathan, Kathryn, and Allie would be going on for most of the next week. Anne lamented not being able to go see her family, but encouraged Kathryn to stay with them while she was in the city.

After everyone had eaten breakfast, Thomas announced it was time for him to go back to work. Nathan decided to join him to make sure he had everything in order before leaving town for several days. They helped clear the dishes, and gave out another round of hugs before leaving their girls and going to the Mountie office in town. Nathan knew he needed to make some phone calls to make travel arrangements, as well as double checking his schedule for the trial and award ceremony at Headquarters. He still couldn’t believe he had a beautiful fiancé who would be accompanying him and Allie on their trip to Union City, and he had never been so excited for a work trip in his life.

____________________________________________________________

News of the engagement spread like wildfire throughout Hope Valley, with some people being shocked at how fast it had happened. But most everyone was excited for their Mountie Inspector and the new school teacher that most had come to know and respect since her arrival. Thomas and Anne, who made friends easily everywhere they had been assigned, had also found a home in the community. Big changes had happened in the Bradshaw family since coming to town, and they all felt extremely blessed.

Ned and Florence were two of the first to find out the news, since Allie just couldn’t contain herself during her shift at the switchboard on Friday afternoon. When Nathan came to pick Allie up on his way home from the office, Florence rushed over and nearly knocked him over as she gathered him in a motherly embrace. “Ned and I are thrilled for you and Kathryn,” she gushed. “No one deserves happiness more than you and our precious Allie. You both have become family to us, and we want to help you with the wedding however we can.”

Ned nodded in approval of what his wife was saying and beamed as he slapped Nathan on the back in congratulations. “Yes, please let us know what we can do to help,” Ned added. “You know you are like a son to me and Allie like a granddaughter. Have you decided on a wedding date yet? Any items you might need for the big day I can get ordered for you, just let me know.”

“We haven’t had time to discuss a wedding date,” he admitted. “But Ned, Florence, we appreciate all you have done for us the past few years since we arrived in Hope Valley. You have become family to us, right Allie?” Nathan put his arm around his daughter who had walked out from the switchboard room to meet him near the front counter of the Mercantile.

“Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Yost, we are so lucky to have you. Working here is so much fun. Are you sure you’ll be ok while I’m in Union City?” Allie took Florence’s hand affectionately, with Ned and Nathan looking on at the special relationship the two had built over the past little while since spending a lot of time working together.

“We’ll be fine, dear,” Florence assured her. “You all go have a wonderful time in the city, and don’t worry about us. We only wish we could be there to see our noble Inspector Grant receive his award.”

Never feeling comfortable with praise and attention, Nathan brushed it off and began to lead Allie out the door. “Have a great week, Yosts. Thanks again for all of your support.” He smiled as they headed home, grateful for the many good people in his life.

Nathan walked home from the livery Saturday evening after giving Newton a good workout before he had to leave his trusty partner for the week. As he approached the row houses, he noticed Elizabeth and little Jack playing out front, enjoying the cooler temperatures as the sun was lowering in the western sky. He hoped to sneak past unnoticed, not wanting to disturb their time together or have yet another forced conversation about his engagement or medal of honor. Everywhere he went, Nathan was peppered with questions. He just wanted some time alone to process his thoughts, which is why his ride on Newton had been so refreshing.

“‘Ountie ‘atan!” suddenly rang out across the street, and little Jack came running to him and jumped in Nathan’s arms before he could even blink. “Where’s ‘ewtan? I rode Sarg with Mama and Hickam!”

“Oh wow, buddy,” Nathan laughed. “I bet Sergeant loved going for a ride. I just got back from riding on Newton, and I hope you will go visit him this week while I’m gone to make sure he doesn’t get lonely.”

Elizabeth looked slightly embarrassed as she approached her son with the man who had previously owned her heart, but she had stupidly hurt him beyond repair. Her heart was healing, but it had still felt like a fresh wound to hear about his engagement to Kathryn...a woman she had tried to dislike, but one who was very much worthy of a man like Nathan. Trying to push away sadness and regret, she managed her bravest smile as she watched his effortless interaction with her little boy.

“Hello, Elizabeth. Jack was just telling me all about his ride on Sarg, and I was asking him to look after Newton while I’m away.” Nathan kept the conversation focused on Jack, to keep the mood light.

Holding her arms out, the little boy readily slipped into her arms for a hug before hopping down and running back over to his toys. “Bye, ‘atan!”

Both adults chuckled and watched him for several seconds before turning back to each other. “I hear congratulations are in order,” Elizabeth began. “Both for your engagement to Kathryn and your award from the Mounties. Both are well deserved, Nathan. You deserve every happiness in life.”

Clearing his throat, Nathan struggled to find the right words at that moment. “Elizabeth, I...you have always been an important part of my life here. I hope you know I will still always be here for whatever you need and I appreciate your kind words. So, your son said you are both spending some time with Hickam. He’s a good man, Elizabeth, and cares about you and little Jack very much.”

Color rose to Elizabeth’s cheeks, not exactly comfortable discussing her dating life with someone she thought she was in love with just a few weeks ago. “Mike is a remarkable man, just like you. We are spending some time getting to know each other better, but I want to get it right this time and not rush into anything. I don’t have the best track record when it comes to men and making good choices in relationships, especially since Jack.” She looked over at her son and a wave of sadness hit her like it often did when she thought of her late husband never getting to help raise their little boy. “I better get Jack inside and ready for bed.” She placed a hand on Nathan’s arm and realized the spark she felt before was now just a warm feeling of affection. “Be happy, dear Nathan. You and Allie deserve it, and Kathryn is intelligent, lovely, and will be the perfect addition to your family.”

“Thank you,” Nathan said sincerely, pulling Elizabeth in for a quick hug. “I’ll see you next week when we get home. Give Mike my best,” he teased with a wink. He continued walking home, but as he approached the Bradshaw’s house, he was surprised to see Kate sitting on the porch with a look on her face he couldn’t quite decipher. “Kate, my love, are you alright?”

“Fine,” she lied, arms folded across her chest. “It’s late, I better get inside and go to bed.”

“Hey!” Nathan approached and turned her around before she could open the front door. “Tell me what’s wrong, please.” He lifted her chin and forced her to look him in the eye, and just like usual they both got lost in each other’s.

Anger melting away with Nathan Grant’s touch and looking into his bright, sparkling blue eyes, Kathryn started forgetting all the things she had been upset about. She finally looked away to break his spell, wanting to be mad a little longer. “Why didn’t you tell me where you were going? I saw you walking toward home, then you stopped to play with Jack and talk to Elizabeth, followed by hugging her. I hate that I have feelings of jealousy whenever I see you with her.”

Confused about the outburst, and knowing it most likely had nothing to do with Elizabeth, he tenderly wrapped his arms around Kate and just held her close until he could feel her blood pressure go down. She melted into him and her breathing finally steadied. “What is really wrong?” he whispered as he kissed her head.

She finally allowed herself to release what she had been holding in since the upsetting phone call she had made earlier that afternoon. “Oh Nathan, I’m sorry I took my frustration out on you and blamed it on Elizabeth,” she sputtered between sobs. “I called Aunt Edith to tell her I was engaged, and she was not happy. I found out she’s in Union City right now, and I wanted to make sure we were able to see her this week so I could introduce you and Allie to her. I don’t need her permission to marry anyone, but she was like a mother to me for many years. It just hurts that she is disappointed by my choice, when she hasn’t even met you. Why can’t she understand I don’t need money or status to be happy?”

Nathan let out a sigh, relieved it really wasn’t him that Kate was mad at, and grateful she loved him despite his humble circumstances and lack of societal standing. “How can I help you feel better?” he breathed, running his big hands up and down her back in comforting strokes.

“Mmmmmm,” she murmured, enjoying his strong, yet gentle touch. “Just being close to you is all I need...and time. I hope Aunt Edith comes around and will agree to see us in Union City. I would be very disappointed if she didn’t come to our wedding.” She stopped and thought for a moment. “Will I get to meet both of your parents at our wedding?”

A deep melancholy fell over Nathan at the mention of his family. “My mother moved East to be with her younger sister, back when her health started failing from all the stress she had endured from my father and then Colleen. She tried to take on Allie for a few months, but it was clear that she just wasn’t strong enough to handle a little girl at her age, and in poor health. We’ve seen her a few times through the years, and she tries to write when she feels well enough. I’ve tried to convince her to talk on the telephone, but she is a little skeptical of new technology. Maybe one day she’ll decide it’s worth trying out the phone, to at least hear her only son’s voice. As for my father, you know we did reconcile, but his health is also suffering after a fall off his horse a few months ago. He’s up in Calgary living alone, but he has been able to get the medical care he needs there and seems to be happy for now. He’s just unable to travel in his current condition.”

Wanting to erase the pain they both had been feeling, Kathryn moved her hands up Nathan’s back and tipped her head up as she looked deeply into his sad soul. He followed her lead and leaned down to meet her lips with his own, seemingly pouring out all of his heartache and letting her start to heal him while at the same time soothing the pain in her heart as well. Together they knew they were stronger, and would help each other through any future obstacles that would come their way. When their lips finally parted, they both felt peaceful and safe in each other’s arms.

Sunday evening after arriving on the train, Nathan and Allie said their goodbyes to Kathryn at the Clements home, when the driver of the car the Mounties had rented dropped her off before driving them to the boarding house where they had stayed only a few months before. It was late when they arrived in Union City, so they decided to save introductions for the next day at a dinner that the Clements had invited Nathan and Allie to at their beautiful home.

“We better get straight to bed,” Nathan decided, when they stepped into their room. “I’ve got court early in the morning, and the driver will drop you off with Kate to spend the day. Did you two make big plans? I hope you won’t do anything too fun without me.”

“Don’t worry, Dad. I’m pretty sure we’ll be doing stuff you would find boring like shopping and getting our hair done,” Allie confessed. “Plus, I thought you wanted us to get a closer relationship, since Miss Bradshaw’s going to be my new mom soon.”

He smiled at the thought, but had to ask, “Are you still having trouble moving past Miss Bradshaw and calling her Aunt Kathryn? I’m fine with whatever feels right to you.”

She thought for a minute, then finally revealed her deepest fear. “I want to call her Aunt Kathryn, and eventually Mom once you are married, but every time I get that close to someone they leave or die. You are the only one who has been in my life and never left me, so I’m scared to love someone else the way I love you. Mrs. Thornton left us when I thought she would join our family. Grandma and Grandpa both have gone away, and we barely get to see them. My mom died, and my first dad didn’t want me. Maybe I’m the reason everyone leaves, and you should have never taken me in and adopted me.”

Nathan gathered Allie up in a bear hug. He put his hands on either side of her face to let her know he was serious. “Allie girl, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. You are not to blame for anyone leaving or dying, and truth be told, any romantic interest who left - Mrs. Thornton included - left because of me and not you. Dating is a rough business, and finding just the right fit for our family took longer than I wanted or expected. But I know, without a doubt, that Kate is the right person for both of us. If she hasn’t left by now, I’m pretty sure she’s committed to sticking around.”

Hugging him one more time, Allie closed her eyes and said a little prayer of thanks for being blessed with such an amazing father who chose to be her Dad. “I love you. Thank you for finding Aunt Kathryn and her family. We’ve never had a real family, and now we are getting the entire Bradshaw clan. I’m nervous, but excited, to meet Mrs. Bradshaw’s family tomorrow and to have dinner at their mansion.” As they got settled in their room and ready for bed, Allie kept chatting, eagerly anticipating the next few days. They both wondered what adventures awaited them on this trip to Union City.

Granting a Family - Chapter 33: No Time Like the Present

It was Thursday afternoon, and Nathan kept having to reread the same document over again because of his inability to concentrate. Before he could attempt to read the text again, the phone ringing startled him out of his distracted thoughts. “Hello, Inspector Grant here,” he answered.

“Inspector, this is Superintendent Lewis,” he heard from the other line. Nathan sat up straight and started to pay closer attention to what was being said. “I wanted to personally call and thank you for all of your hard work in catching the elusive Rutherford Gang. I worked with Constable Kinslow, who was very helpful in getting them transferred here to Union City. He had many good things to say about your skills as a tracker and investigator. I knew you were the right choice for Inspector in the Hope Valley area. You’ve done a great job with Constable Bradshaw, not only as a superior but also as a mentor. Constable Kinslow feels you have been the same for him.”

“Thank you, sir. I am just doing my duty,” Nathan admitted, almost embarrassed to be getting so much praise from the Superintendent. “Is there anything I can help you with to get the case wrapped up?”

Silence on the other end for a split second started to worry him, especially when  Superintendent Lewis cleared his throat and continued. “I just found out the trial starts on Monday, and I need you there to testify so we can get these guys put away for a really long time. I have also put you in for a medal of valor for your bravery and proficiency in which you conducted and secured this case. I’ll need you in Union City by Sunday, where you will testify in this trial on Monday or Tuesday. Wednesday is when our award ceremony will be held at headquarters. You are welcome to bring your daughter and anyone else important to you. I know Constable Bradshaw would have loved to attend, but I understand he’s a new father and needs to stay home to be close to his family for a little while longer.”

Ideas swirled around inside his head, and Nathan started feeling anxious that he only had two days to prepare for a trip to Union City while still trying to plan and carry out a marriage proposal worthy of the woman he loved. That is if he could find the ring he had tucked away for safekeeping long ago when his mother had given him the heirloom. He had been spending every spare minute tearing the house apart to no avail, and he knew if it didn’t show up soon he would have to buy a new one before popping the question.

Realizing he hadn’t answered the Superintendent he finally spoke again. “Sir, I will make necessary arrangements to be in Union City on Sunday. I know Allie will be thrilled to spend more time in the city.”

“I will plan on meeting you at the courthouse for trial Monday morning at 8 sharp. I will arrange for you and Allie to stay at the same boarding house from when you came to Inspector training. If you need any additional rooms, please call and let me know by tomorrow. I apologize this is such short notice.”

“I appreciate the phone call, Superintendent Lewis,” Nathan communicated. “I’m humbled and honored for any recognition for just doing my job. You have always been very supportive of me and my career and I appreciate the way you have guided me through the years. I look forward to seeing you in a few days.” They exchanged goodbyes and hung up.

Nathan was getting ready to leave the office when the door burst open and in walked Rosemary Coulter, Editor of the Valley Voice and Hope Valley’s top source for information regarding just about everyone’s business. “What can I do for you, Rosemary?” Nathan asked hesitantly.

“Hello, Nathan!” Rosemary called cheerfully. “I’m writing an article about your big criminal capture, and wondered if you had time for me to do an official interview? I may have had a source come forward with information about a medal being awarded to you next week in Union City? My newspaper would like to feature you on the front page of our next edition!”

“That really isn’t necessary,” Nathan assured her, amazed she knew about his Union City trip and award before he did. “I just got off the phone with the Superintendent, so I haven’t had a chance to make plans for my trip. I was just heading out to track down Allie and tell her the news.”

Rosemary bit her lip in frustration, trying to figure out a way to interview the town hero without making him feel uncomfortable. “I just saw Allie with Robert delivering the mail. I don’t think they will be back for at least another hour, and that is if they don’t take their time so they have more time to spend together.”

He let out a groan at the mention of his daughter spending time with the boy she, in her terms, “like-liked”. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to Allie spending time with boys,” Nathan lamented, but suddenly regretted his words by the pained look on Rosemary’s face. “Hey, why don’t you come sit down and talk?”

Tears welled up in Rosemary’s eyes and she wiped them away, keeping a smile on her face and trying to stay composed. “I’m sorry, Nathan. Lately I’ve just been thinking about how Lee and I are not getting any younger. I want to see him become a father, because he is so good with children. I never felt like I had strong maternal instincts, but after having Rachel stay with us it made me even more aware of my desire to raise a child.”

Knowing how the birth of Elsie had affected his own desire to have a complete family and child of his own made Nathan feel deep feelings of empathy for the Coulters. “You know, when I was in Brookfield I spoke to Lillian when she came to see Gabe at the Mountie office. She and Grace just took in a new little boy. He’s really struggling being around all of the other kids, because he is used to being an only child. His mother died in childbirth, as well as the baby sister, about a year ago. His father was a Mountie who was killed six months ago by the gang we just arrested. This poor little six year old is traumatized and has no close family able to take him in, which is how he ended up at the orphanage.”

“Oh my goodness!” Rosemary exclaimed. “That poor little boy.” More tears streamed down her face as she contemplated the plight of the new orphan in Brookfield. “I’ve been trying to get up the courage to talk to Lee about adopting. I’ve accepted that having a biological child is not in the cards for us, but adopting a child comes with its own set of difficulties. But I guess you would know that better than just about anyone.”

Nathan stood up and moved to the other side of the desk where Rosemary was sitting and put his hand on her shoulder, looking her in the eyes. “Adoption isn’t easy. Raising any child is difficult, but one who has lost parents and has no one left when you take them in is especially demanding. I have said this before, but adopting Allie is the best thing I have ever done in my life up to this point.  What I share with her I would never give up, not in a million years. I will never tell you and Lee what to do, but I know that if you find it in your hearts to bring a child into your home you will be surprised how quickly they feel like you’ve had them forever. Not every situation is the same, but I am here to support whatever decisions you make to have a family.”

They both sat and pondered their own families expanding soon, until they heard the office door open and Thomas hurried in. “Hello Nathan. Mrs. Coulter, it’s good to see you again.”

“Constable Bradshaw. How are Anne and baby Elsie? I’ve heard what a darling baby she is, and apologize I haven’t been over to see her and bring a gift or food. I promise to come by this weekend to make up for that.”

“Thank you, that is so kind. I am a little biased so I think she’s the most adorable baby girl the world has ever seen, but she does have the most beautiful mother so it makes sense.” Thomas beamed with pride as he talked about his girls.

Rosemary gave him a genuine smile and looked at Nathan who also was nodding in agreement to what the Constable had said. She knew the two men had become very close, especially since they might actually become brothers if Nathan married Kathryn. She wished she had asked him how things were going with that relationship before they were interrupted, but she needed to finish writing an article she had been working on before coming to ask Nathan for an interview. She said goodbye and walked outside, determined to finally have a talk with Lee about taking the steps necessary to become parents and give all the love they had to a child in need.

___________________________________________________________

Kathryn had been trying to focus on her lesson plans all morning, but all she could think about was how strange everyone had been acting since the weekend. When Nathan first got back from his big week in Brookfield, things seemed to be so good between them. Even her relationship with Allie had strengthened as she stayed with her at the Grant’s home all week. But both of them acted like they were too busy to spend much time with her this week. Then there was Thomas and Anne who she would catch whispering until they saw her, then they would just smile and act like nothing happened. She hadn’t noticed Elizabeth come in, due to her distracted mind that kept wandering around trying to figure out what would cause such a big change in those around her.

“I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” Elizabeth remarked, setting her basket down on the desk. “You looked deep in thought.”

Kathryn smiled and shook her head, “No, no. I’ve just had a lot on my mind. How have you been?”

Elizabeth sighed heavily and sat down in a pew in front of her fellow teacher, letting her troubles all spill out of her. “I’m so confused right now. Mike Hickam wants to start seeing me. We have such a good time together, and he is good with little Jack who adores him. But I have been so bad with relationships since Jack died, that I feel like it’s not even fair to let a man get close to me and my son. I’m sorry, I’m sure this is the last thing you need to hear right now, especially from me.”

“I’m glad you feel comfortable opening up to me,” Kathryn replied. “I want to be your friend, especially since we will be working together. As far as things go with Mike, I say you do what makes you happy. However, I’m not sure I should be the one to give you advice with men, especially when I can’t figure out Nathan Grant.” She immediately realized what she said and felt a twinge of regret. “Elizabeth, I’m so sorry for bringing him up right now. Why do men have to be so confusing sometimes?”

Both women sat mulling over their respective relationship challenges in silence until they heard two giggling teenagers enter the school. Allie and Robert walked in to drop off the mail with just a simple hello. Absorbed in their own little world, they quickly went on their way to finish the route.

“I think those two have things figured out better than we do as adults,” Elizabeth observed. “Sometimes we tend to complicate what should be simple.”

Before Kathryn could respond, Rosemary burst into the school and sat down next to Elizabeth. “Oh, hello Kathryn. I just came from the Mountie office, and I’m sure you are thrilled at Nathan’s big news.”

“What big news?” Kathryn wondered, her head spinning with even more questions. “If you’ll excuse me…” She hurried to gather up her things and quickly rushed out the door, walking as fast as she could toward home. If Nathan had something important to share, why would he tell her first? She was walking so fast and furiously that she almost ran right into Inspector Nathan Grant as he was also on his way home.

“Kate!” Nathan gasped, reaching out to steady her and trying to figure out why she looked so upset. “Is everything ok, love?”

Her expression softened hearing him call her his love, but she became even more confused and demanded answers. “So, what’s your big news?”

Squinting as he tried to shield his eyes from the sun shining directly in them, he tried to figure out what she meant by “big news”. He grabbed her hands into his own and wrapped his fingers around hers. “You are going to have to explain what you mean by that.”

His touch immediately erased her frustration, and Kathryn realized how irrational she was being. “Nathan, I’m sorry. Rosemary just came by the school and said you had news that I didn’t know about, and you just haven’t been acting like yourself this week so I thought you were keeping things from me.” She looked him in the eyes and tried to get a sense of what was going on with him, but all she saw in his eyes was love mixed with concern for her.

He wrapped Kate in a hug and breathed in the scent of her that he had become accustomed to...a smell still lingering in his bedroom from when she had slept in his bed while looking after Allie when he was out of town. “I do have something I was going to tell you. I literally just got a call from my Superintendent not long ago, and I have no idea how Rosemary found out before me. Would you like to come to the house for some tea and I can fill you in on what I know?”

“Can we go to my house?” Kathryn requested. “I’ve got to check on Anne and Elsie for Thomas right now, and take these school supplies back home.”

“Sure,” he answered, taking the basket of school supplies from her and holding her hand as they began walking toward the row houses. “I was hoping to find Allie, but Florence said she is off delivering mail with Robert.” His jaw tightened thinking about his little girl spending time with a boy, even though he liked Robert more than most. He just didn’t want her to grow up too fast and was secretly counting down the months to new Mountie recruit training next spring.

They arrived at the Bradshaw’s row house and quietly entered, just in case people were sleeping inside. To their surprise, Anne was downstairs eating and trying to take a break. “Oh, hello you two. Would you like some fresh lemonade this hot afternoon?”

Setting Kate’s basket on the counter, Nathan poured two glasses of lemonade and set them on the table. “This looks very refreshing,” he commented. “How are you and baby Elsie doing today?”

Tears formed in Anne’s eyes, and she tried to brush her emotions away. “It has been a more difficult day,” she admitted. “But I think all of the sentiment from becoming a new mother is making me a little unbalanced.”

“Probably mixed with a lack of sleep,” Kathryn sympathized. As if on cue, baby Elsie began crying and the tears flowed even more down Anne’s face. “Let’s get you up to bed for a nap, and I’ll take care of Elsie for you.” She helped her sister-in-law get up the stairs, then took the baby from her cradle and returned back to the kitchen where Nathan was pouring himself a second glass of lemonade.

Elsie was still fussing, even with Kate lightly bouncing her just the way she liked. Nathan moved over and picked up the infant, putting her up against his shoulder and lightly rubbing and patting her back to move the air bubbles out of her little tummy. She snuggled into him, and Kate melted at the sight of her strong Mountie delicately and lovingly soothing a newborn. “She just likes Uncle Nathan, don’t you baby.”

Kathryn smiled, her heart fluttering at his reference of being an uncle. She knew Allie called him Uncle Nathan until the adoption was finalized and she began calling him Dad, but the implication of him joining her family someday was almost too much for her to take. “You really are so good with little ones,” she admired. “Now, what does Rosemary know that I don’t?”

He continued to pacify the baby while he spoke, but sat down across the table from Kate. “I have some good and bad news, so I’ll start with the bad. I have to go to Union City to testify in the trial of the Rutherford Gang, so I’ll be going on Sunday. I’ve also been selected for a medal given by my superiors in a ceremony while in the city, and they want me to bring Allie and whoever else would be interested.” As he told of the award, Elsie’s bubbles finally released and she let out a big burp, followed by spitting up all over Nathan’s shirt and suspenders.

“Oh no!” Kathryn screeched, trying not to laugh. She grabbed a towel from the kitchen and tried to clean both Nathan and Elsie, who finally seemed perfectly content. “It looks like you successfully found what was making her uncomfortable.” They both started to giggle as they tried to get them both clean the best they could. “You probably need to go home to clean up and change. I better change the baby and get her back down before her next feeding. I’m so proud of you for the deserved recognition. I want to talk about the trip to Union City more in depth, but I think we need to go where we won’t be interrupted. Would you like to meet me tomorrow morning at the designated Grant Family special spot just after sunrise before it gets too hot?”

“Of course. I think that sounds like a great idea. I have plans with Allie tonight to go fishing, and will talk to her about Union City. I’ll see you bright and early.” Nathan leaned down and placed a quick kiss to her lips, trying to keep the baby spit up from getting on her. “I love you, Kate. Have a good evening.” He kissed Elsie on the head, and left the Bradshaw’s to go home and change before Allie got home to spend time with him.

It was a slow night of fishing, with barely any bites. Luckily, Allie had packed a picnic so they didn’t go hungry. Nathan was enjoying the one-on-one time with his daughter, knowing it probably wouldn’t be just the two of them much longer. He decided since the fish weren’t cooperating anyway, it was time to tell her the news that might cause a loud reaction. “Allie, I wanted to talk to you about me having to go to Union City for a few days.” He saw her face fall, but she put on a brave face, encouraging him to continue. “However, they would like me to invite you to come because I am being honored at Headquarters and they thought you might like to be there. They have already reserved a room for us at the same boarding house we stayed at in the spring.”

Her squeal would have scared off any fish that might have been around, and she nearly tackled Nathan with a hug. “I take that as a yes, you would like to visit Union City again?” he confirmed. “Do you mind if I ask Kate to come with us? I could check on getting her another room at the boarding house, or she might want to stay with the Clements - Anne’s family.”

Allie smiled and nodded. “Of course she should come! But I thought you were going to ask her to marry you soon. I’m having a hard time keeping it a secret from everyone, especially Robert! Are you going to propose in Union City? That would be so romantic,” she suggested, batting her eyes and clasping her hands together.

Rolling his eyes and slightly blushing, he questioned, “Where exactly did you learn about romance? I hope not from your own experience.”

She shook her head and said matter-of-factly, “Everything I know about romance comes directly from reading all those books. I guess that’s not necessarily real life though.”

“Well, if you must know I’m trying to find the ring and then I can come up with a plan. I know it needs to happen kind of soon, and maybe I could ask her in Union City if the ring turns up before we leave. Or maybe I’ll have to buy a new ring in the city.” He sat considering his options, when suddenly Allie perked up and threw her arms in the air.

“Wait, are you talking about Great Grandma’s ring? I know right where it is!” she exclaimed. “Remember when we first got to Hope Valley, and one day you asked me to put the ring somewhere special so you wouldn’t forget and lose it? I’ve had it in my special box with the few things I have left from my Mom, and I kind of forgot until just now that it was there. When we get home I’ll give it to you. Sorry I didn’t think of that sooner, Dad.”

Letting out a huge sigh of relief, Nathan stood and hugged Allie. “What a relief! I was worried sick that I had lost something so valuable that I really wanted to give to Kate.” Seeing that the sun was starting to lower in the western sky, Nathan suggested they pack up and head home. He had an early morning rendezvous with a gorgeous blonde woman at one of his favorite locations.

Waiting for Nathan near the river past the waterfall, Kathryn was surprised she had beat him there since he was much better at mornings than she was. She had brought a blanket, and a basket of muffins and thermos of coffee she had made early this morning while the rest of the family was sleeping. She sat on the blanket with her eyes closed, listening to the flowing water and feeling a light breeze on her face and through her hair. She wore her favorite lavender dress, accented with her heirloom emerald jewelry that matched her eyes, and her hair was carefully curled and fell off her shoulders and down her back. Memories of the first time Nathan invited her to this place that meant so much to him filled her mind.

Before she felt his hands on her shoulders, Kathryn felt the presence of Nathan Grant - even though he moved so quietly she couldn’t hear him sneak up behind her. She kept her eyes closed as he leaned in, his lips right near her ear as he whispered, “Good morning, my beautiful Kate.”

Finally opening up her eyes and turning to face him, she admired how handsome he looked in his partially unbuttoned blue shirt that brought out his eyes, paired with matching gray pants and suspenders, and his thick dark locks combed back with one stray curl framing his forehead. They both stood and embraced for a moment, then looked briefly into each other’s eyes before moving in for a much-anticipated kiss. It had been a frustrating week for both of them, and the kiss reflected their many emotions that had been just beneath the surface for days. Knowing they were alone and wouldn’t be interrupted only caused them to let go more than usual. Air became necessary after a certain period of time, and their lips broke apart with both of them feeling breathless and alive. Kathryn put her head on his chest, listening to his racing heart and knowing they probably needed a chaperone more than ever at this stage of their relationship. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the way he ran his long fingers through her hair. Their heartbeats and breathing slowed down as they just enjoyed being close.

“I brought some coffee and muffins,” Kathryn finally squeaked. “And we need to talk about the trip to Union City.” She took Nathan’s hand and led him to the blanket where she put a little distance between them so as to not get distracted. “When would we need to be in Union City and for how long? I’m certain the Clements would let me stay with them, which would probably be smarter than both of us staying at the boarding house. I can take Allie and show her more of the city while you are busy with Mountie business, and of course we will both be there to cheer you on getting recognized at Headquarters. Maybe the three of us can even attend the theatre while we are visiting. I’ll have to ask Mrs. Clements what is playing right now.”

Eating a muffin while she had been talking, Nathan got caught up in Kate’s enthusiasm. A vision of her in that burgundy dress at the theatre, holding his hand during the performance, danced through his head. He finished the muffin and drank some coffee to wash it down. Nathan then stood and offered his hand to Kate, which she readily took and began walking with him to the exact spot they stood and talked several weeks ago. They tried to skip rocks and laughed together as they discussed what awaited them in the big city.

Nathan stuck his hand in his pocket to find a handkerchief and instantly felt his Grandmother’s ring. He hadn’t planned on proposing when he left this morning, but had decided to keep the ring in his pocket at all times until the moment felt right to put it on Kate’s finger. He slowly turned around and the sun had just come over the trees with rays of light shining through her long golden curls, making her look like an angel. He knew there would never be as perfect a moment as this to get down on one knee and ask her to be his forever.

Looking in the sky to finally see the sun appear, Kathryn basked in the beauty of that moment and looked over to see Nathan with a peculiar look on his face with his hand in his pocket. He pulled something shiny out and walked the short distance to her, stopping just short of embracing her and suddenly dropping to one knee. Her body went numb and the realization of what was happening hit her like a ton of bricks. She wanted to speak, but the ability to vocalize anything swiftly disappeared and she stood there with her mouth gaping open and her pulse sped up considerably. Nathan reached for her left hand and she put her right hand over her mouth, trying to stop the gasps that were threatening to escape.

Tears were already starting to form before Nathan could speak a single word. He swallowed and tried to compose himself before he began speaking from his heart. “Kate,” he began. “You are the most wonderful, beautiful, kind, loving, and intelligent woman I’ve ever known. There aren’t enough words to describe the love and adoration I have for you. I know without a doubt that you are the love of my life, and the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want to raise a family with you, build a home with you, and grow old with you. I asked your brother Thomas, in place of your dad, for his blessing and consent to ask for your hand. I also spoke with Allie, and she is thrilled to have you officially join our family. So, with all that being said, my one and only Kathryn Bradshaw...will you make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?” By the time he finished speaking, tears were flowing freely down both their faces, and both of their hands were trembling as Nathan slipped the ring onto Kate’s finger.

Kathryn looked at the beautiful antique gold ring that was delicately carved like a rose, with a ruby as the center stone, and tiny diamonds surrounding it to make it sparkle even brighter. “Oh Nathan, it is absolutely perfect and the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen!”

“So is that a yes,” he teased, standing up and kissing where the ring now sat on her hand.

“Yes, yes, yes!” she cried. “Nathan Grant, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would find a man like you who is strong, yet kind and a natural protector, father, and friend. I could search the world over and not find anyone else better suited for me than you. As a bonus, you are the most handsome man I’ve ever laid eyes on. Being a part of the Grant Family is an absolute dream come true.”

If she hadn’t been done talking, she lost the chance to say another word when Nathan picked her up and swung her around in pure joy. He set her down slowly and put one hand through her hair and rested it on the back of her neck. His other hand tipped her chin upward and he leaned down to meet her lips with his own, exploring them freely and passionately. His hand went behind her back and he pulled her closer to him, enjoying the sweet taste of his new fiancé.

All thoughts totally escaped Kathryn’s mind as she shared her first ever kiss as an engaged woman to the man of her dreams. Wanting to continue, but knowing they had to keep boundaries they had both set long ago, she gently pulled away. “I love you, Nate,” Kathryn murmured, their foreheads resting together.

“I love you more, Kate,” Nathan breathed, his voice cracking with emotion. “My dream of having a complete family is about to come true. I can’t wait to see what this new chapter will bring. Suddenly this little piece of heaven became an even more important plot of land to the Grant Family.
